I have someone asking me about the best way to get to New York City from Yale, where she will be visiting in October. She is from Asia and this is her first visit to the US. She will have friend in NYC to drive her from NYC to New Haven but have to get back herself. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The MTA new haven line [mta.info | MTA Metro-North Railroad](http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_results.cfm?n=y)

The entire mta web site might be a bit daunting for a first timer! So, here’s the link to the page that might be a little easier to navigate. Just scroll down the stations from Grand Central to New Haven, which is where Yale is, as you know, select the time you want to travel, and you will find the schedule:

Easiest is to take the train, MTA Metro North-New Haven Line from downtown New Haven, a few blocks from the Yale campus. It’s about 90 minutes to just under 2 hours to Grand Central Terminal, depending on the train and time of day. Service is pretty frequent, at least hourly but more frequent during rush hours. One-way off-speak fare is $14, peak is $18.50 if you buy a ticket at the station before boarding the train; higher if you buy from the conductor on the train.

franglish-
weird thing-- I had the page on my screen that had the schedule from New Haven to Grand Central, but the link was to the main page, which I agree was a bit overwhelming!

Thank you everyone.

Franglish : that made it a bit easier, not only for her but for me too

bclintonk: I will let her know what you said. I had looked up the maps & schedules but wanted to hear from someone more familiar with the surroundings since I don’t know that area myself.

I visited Yale to see my cousins and took the MTA train. I’d suggest taking the morning/afternoon trains as the evening trains get there late. I walked to the train station from Yale but it’s a bit seedy and she’ll probably want someone to drive her to the New Haven station (or get a cab). Cab fare was <$10. The trains can also be late sometimes; my morning train was about an hour late. On arrival Grand Central can also be quite chaotic, as there are many exits, so she should get good directions for where to go upon returning to NYC.
