Hello all!

I was recently selected for a job on campus today. They wanted me to come in at 2pm today but I had a doctor’s appointment. I called back and asked them if I could come in at 430pm today. Long story short, I couldn’t make it because of traffic. I tried emailing/calling the person who hired me but I think they were in a meeting, I only got through once. They only wanted me to come in to sign paperwork but the thing is I’m an hour away and traffic from my house to school is horrible sometimes. Unfortunately today was one of those days, also I my car is having trouble and I can’t drive it so I have to rely on other people to drive me to school for things like this. I’ve emailed him back and told him I can come on Monday since I’ll already be on campus (I’m dorming btw) and it’ll be easier for me but if he wants me to come in tomorrow I can do that too. In order for me to do that my mom would have to drive me to school at 5am and then drive back to work which is 1hr 45 for her. I really don’t want her to do that because she’s already stressed. I told her that I’ve emailed them about coming in on Monday but she doesn’t want to risk it. Do you guys think I’ll lose the job for traffic? Or will I be ok?

Usually if you’re only meeting with HR to sign paperwork, they’re flexible with setting up a time that can work for both of you. For you next meeting, however, make sure you set a time that you can definitely make. Don’t make this a pattern where you keep missing appointments because of traffic or whatnot.

It doesn’t sound like it will be an issue once you actually start the job, since you’ll be living on campus. Just apologize for missing the last meeting, and set up a new time with HR that you can definitely make. You can explain your situation if you want to (that you’re coming from a long distance, but since you will be moving on campus, you would be able to meet to sign the paperwork on Monday), but it shouldn’t be that much of an issue. Be polite and professional. They’re probably used to working with students and issues like this.

EDIT: I didn’t see that you got the job today and that they wanted you to come in right away. They might not know that you are not currently on campus, so you could tell them that and schedule a meeting for Monday. As long as you don’t have to start the job before then, it should be fine, but explain your situation (but don’t go into too much detail) and ask if waiting until Monday is acceptable.

Just an update. I’ve scheduled to come in on Monday after class, which is awesome! It’s more flexible for me since I can just walk across campus to my job and sign everything then get straight to work. Thanks for all your help!
