Transportation

Hi, I’m a student but I’m posting this in the Parents forum because I’d like to see replies from a parent’s point of view, or anyone who has gone through a similar situation:

I’m planning to enroll in a nearby college to take a course this summer. I had it all planned out, and my parents were willing to pay for it.

Then I realized, no one in my family was willing to take me there. It’s twice a week, from 6pm to 10pm. My parents can’t: one has to work and the other has a fear of highways and driving at night, and they won’t let me go by myself on public transportation (bus, train) out of fear I’ll get kidnapped, etc. at 10pm. Plus their attitude is “Psh, why do you want to take a college course when you can do that in college?” I don’t have any friends that will be available (they’re all going to residential programs).

Any advice or suggestions on what I should do? I was wondering if perhaps I could get like a bus service to get me there but have no idea how or how much the cost would be.

Check with the college and see if there are ridesharing opportunities from the college to your area. There may be other students in your area doing the same thing as you.

Get a license and drive yourself. Get a job and buy a car if necessary.

Find a friend or another student in your area who’ll be on the same schedule and have them ride the public transit with you in an effort to convince your parents you won’t be kidnapped.

Find a class that meets on Saturdays or during the day rather than at night.

How old are you? How far is this school from your home? What type of area are we talking about? What are the balance of your summer plans?

Are there other classes getting out at the same time…if so, then there would be lots of people around…

Check to see if the college has a shuttle service anywhere that would get you closer to home

First thing you should have done before posting her is contact the school, at least then you will know your options

If you were on the bus, how far is the stop from your house? You won’t get kidnapped on the bus…jsut sit near the driver, have your selfphone and keep in contact, would your parent drive to the bus stop near your house to get you?

they can do that right?

I’m 16 (haven’t even gotten my permit yet), and the school is 30+ minutes from home through the highway. The school doesn’t offer Saturday classes, and I have this prep thing during the day, so I can’t possibly take a day course.

I’ve gone onto the school web site, but they only had information on shuttle services to other campuses in the system. I will probably contact them for more information on their shuttle service.

How far does the bus drop you from your home, do you have a cell phone, are there other classes getting out at the same time, etc…

Can your parents get you from the bus stop, so you are always with someone, not walking home, etc

We can help you work with your parents but we need more details

My DS took an internet based college class. Does your CC have any online classes you could take? No transportation needed except for orientation class and exams…
