Which schools in the NE area have unique travel abroad programs? Most schools have the semester abroad in Spain, France, China and Germany, but are there any unusual places, or shorter trips (a few weeks or one month)? Or trips during vacations?
I don’t know about any other schools, but Groton has a good travel program, most of them are three weeks in the summer. This summer they did China, Peru and Uganda. Last summer they did Tanzania, Dominican Republic and a World War II trip. The music programs have visited Cuba, Europe and South Africa. I believe they also have done France and India over spring break. You can check out the blogs from the trips on the website.
George School has service trips over spring break and after the year ends for its students. Cuba, South Africa, Nicaragua, Vietnam, China, Costa Rica, Bonaire, Uganda, Brazil, France. Some happen every year, some every other. Certain ones come and go. Some reqiire language proficiency, while others are open to everyone. Are you looking for schools to apply to that offer this or are you looking for programs for students enrolled elsewhere?
Kent offers several options of varying lengths for vacation travel that include study and community service elements. I think that is fairly common. Hotchkiss has even more. DS2 is currently on a two week arts immersion course in Florence.
Right now I’m looking for schools to apply to. I have some GLADCHEMMS, but I really want a better variety. Kent is another one I’m looking at, but the George School is a little far from where I’m looking (CT, MA, NH, RI).
Exeter has tons. Many are scheduled over thanksgiving and spring break. Cuba and Great Wall of china were a few last year. Also island school (Bahamas) and mountain school.
Has anyone done any of these, or has tips about them?
Berkshire School has some amazing travel opportunities! I am a current student there and just in the past years student have done semesters or full years in Spain, Japan, China, Italy, Germany, The Island School in the Bahamas, France and many, many more. If there a certain exchange program or place that you are interested in, the school can help you coordinate a exchange semester there as well. Another amazing program that Berkshire offers is something called Pro Vita. Pro Vita is the week right before spring break and Berkshire usually offers 6-9 national and international trips. During Pro Vita, students take courses in fun and interesting things that they wouldn’t normally learn in a typical classroom setting (ex. Woodcarving, curling, website design, presidential election analysis, how social media influences us, baking, vegan cooking, the history of bread and bread making, yoga, rock climbing, breakdancing, the history of tea, acapella, fashion design etc.) Guest teachers, speakers, authors, coreographers, composers, and artists come in to teach courses along with teachers, and upperclassmen can also teach a course in something they are passionate about. I will attach a link below to the Pro Vita page on the Berkshire website so that you can go look at the trips that were offered last year and learn more about them in depth. There were so many cool ones, but I’ll just attach the link so you can read them for yourself because I probably won’t be able to explain the trips very well. There were trips to the Bahamas, Spain, Arizona (to visit the Navajo reservations), Iceland, Minnesota (doggsledding) and so many more!!! The trips change every year, and some very popular ones are kept. If you have any questions about the travel/ exchange programs, pro vita, or questions about Berkshire in general, just pm me… good luck!

The Berkshire trips look amazing on the website! Just one question; would going on one of the trips take the place of attending any of the Pro Vita classes?
@GoldSilver our son attended Island School. http://www.islandschool.org/ Priceless experience.
Here is a link to the travel programs offered at SPS: https://www.sps.edu/page/school-life/off-campus-programs/program-offerings
i know andover goes to russia, india, nepal, and other less mainstream places based on the languages people take.
@GoldSilver The Pro Vita trips abroad go on the same week that the Pro Vita courses are taught (the week before spring break), so yes, you do miss the on campus courses
Fortunately, there are 4 years of high school so you can experience Pro Vita courses on campus, as well as international travel!
It still sounds amazing! Have you ever taken any of the trips, or know anyone who has?
Yes! Berkshire is a small school of about 400 students so everybody has the opportunity to go on a trip if they want to during their years at Berkshire. Just for privacy reasons I don’t want to give away to much information on myself but I personally haven’t been in a trip yet (planning to go on one this upcoming year
) but I have 4-5 friends that went on trips this year and LOVED it. They had so much fun and said that they learned so much. Berkshire is the only high school in the county that offers a program like Pro Vita- it is truly one of a kind- and I can’t wait to take advantage of the travel opportunities. I can’t wait to go on one myself! If you have any questions about Pro Vita trips or Berkshire just pm me- I would be more than happy to answer! @goldandsilver
Whoops sorry @goldandsilver I tagged the wrong person- I meant @GoldSilver
