We are taking a trip to Europe this spring and then a cruise. In the past I have received brochures for Emergency Travel Insurance that covers things like evacuation, and other things. It wasn’t terrible expensive, if I remember correctly. However, I lost the last information that I have had. When I google it, mostly it comes with trip insurance, which we already have. Does anyone have any recommendations?
@silverlady What does your trip insurance cover. Although I am just now getting into traveling, those I know who frequently travel always decline the trip’s insurance and purchase independent travel insurance which protects against cancellation, medical emergencies and repatriation.
Check with your medical insurance provider. Sometimes there is already some travel contingencies or you can buy it through them.
What exactly is it that you’re seeking? Medjetassist.com provides travel evacuation from the hospital to the hospital of your choice—at home or wherever for the patient and caregiver.
Read the terms of the policy/policies you have before buying something more. No one here knows what you have nor what you want. Sone regular medical insurance policies cover you up to the extent of usual and customary charges in the US, even tho international will be considered out of network.
Insuremytrip.com is one place to start. Enter your travel details, and click on through to the page that lists the first set of suggested plans. On the left-hand side of the page, you can select more filters, which will let you focus on the medical-only plans.
Have a great trip!
My current health insurance wouldn’t cover a trip last year. I used Allianz and iirc, it covered medical and more. At a low cost. I chose a low cap for something like an alernate flight home, but my main interest was if I landed in a hospital. Easy to set up, I called and spoke with a rep. so I could ask questions.
I use Allianz. The cheaper the trip, the cheaper the insurance, so I put trip cost as a few major expenses and forgo insuring cheaper lodging. I have heard sufficient stories that feel evacuation insurance is crucial after a certain point in life.
TravelGuard is travel insurance with a medical clause.
I believe ds used Allianz when he traveled to SE Asia last summer. His grandfather (my fil) passed away unexpectedly, and the policy covered all but about $20 of his flight back some. There can be reasons other than a health situation that can interrupt one’s trip.
My D started at Insuremytrip when she needed specific insurance to cover evacuation and hazardous sports coverage.
My health insurance doesn’t provide out of country coverage and my insurance agent referred me to a company that provided just medical. I’ll need to look up the company name. Edit -company was Geoblue.
I also like to use my Chase Sapphire card for any travel related purchases as they provide some travel insurance on items purchased through them.
insuremytrip.com and squaremouth.com are two places to check. If all you are concerned about is medical coverage then enter $0 for the trip value (squaremouth has a button to let you do this). I usually go thru squaremouth.
Be sure that you select medical coverage that is primary, meaning they pay for covered expenses regardless of any other insurance you might have. If secondary you may have to pay yoursel while abroad, show your current insurance won’t pay, and then submit the bill. This sounds like a hassle, and you can find primary coverage policies for the same price.
A medical-only policy is inexpensive, we’ve been paying $50-$75 per trip
S19’s sports team used Trawick International. Their Safe Travels plan was what most of the athletes got. This is a primary medical insurance plan and satisfies visa requirements for EU countries. You can add various riders based on what your trip will involve. It cost like $35-40 for a 10-day trip.
