Travel Europe & Africa While Gaining a Bachelor Degree

Dns introduction
Hi my name is Steve and I’m from Essex England, I’m 28 years old and I’m a Chef, I join Dns in July of this year after going to an information meeting in London then coming for a prep weekend in April and having a look around. I decided to become a part of Dns because I wanted to learn more about the world outside of what the media report about. So now I’m going to tell you a little bit about Dns Tvind and why I’m proud to be a part of Team 2011.
Founded in the country side of Denmark in 1972 Dns was created with the idea of training teacher in life skills as well as book smarts. They called them self a “University with a different” unlike the UK, USA, and other countries, Dns isn’t a university only for the rich, and doesn’t make you take out a student loan to join. We work to pay for our education and at the same time we learn new skill as well as becoming teachers. Here in Tvind we don’t have cooks, cleaner, maintances guys or builder the student and teacher work together to keep this school running. We all live together, work together and play together showing that no one person is better than the other.
Dns has change many times of the past 39 years evolving with the world to keep up with the method of teaching. But the same standards still apply: “Learn by Doing” this mean we don’t just read a text from a book to learn, we put are our self in real life situation. “The World Is Are Classroom” We travel and explore to dig deeper into the subject that we are learning about. And from these two standards Dns has placed over 500+ teacher into the world today.
So why become a teacher?
Teaching is one of only a thou humble job that someone could do, being able to past on your own knowledge to other is like giving your students a gift every day. And in return you can see your students growing in role model of the future. Making sports time, Music and Natural walk are all about being a good teacher, taking your student out into the world there are learning about just like you did in your studies at Dns. But being a teacher doesn’t stop there. Just because you have graduated you still have a lot to learn every day, the world keep changing.
This year Dns has changed again from a 4 year program into a 3 year program: Our first year is a period of travel across Europe and Northern Africa for 4 months to make investigation in different towns and cities on how different cultures live, but before we do this we will need to plan our travel and prepare our buses so we can live and study while on our travels, this will be a 2 month period, then after we return from Africa we will be make presentation to different people across Denmark about what we have learnt and seen. Then to finish our first year we will have another saving up period to get our self ready for the next year. The first year is designed to put us into the world and to open your eyes to the real world outside of the media.
Year 2: Moving to a European city in groups with your team mates to live and work with the parents of the rich and poor. Making; open house evening and projects to really bond with the community. This is a 9 month period of our second year and while we are living with different community and learning the parent’s side of the story, we will also be writing reports so when we get back to Tvind we can make a book on our studies of what we have learnt in the past 9 months. Then we have 3 month call “Do what you find most appropriate” and in this time we need to plan something anything that you find you will learn the most from. It will also need planning and a budget. But for example if you wanted to climb a mountain then you would need a guide, equipment and a route to take. If you wanted to help in a 3rd world project when you would need to choose a project get any vaccination you might need. And always whatever you decide to do, you will need to write reports so you can present your story when you get back to Tvind.
Year 3: Teaching practice in Tvind schools across Denmark: This is the first time were we get to connect with the children, and practice our own methods of teaching. This 3rd year is also studying specialization and preparing for our final exam.
At the end of our time here in Dns Tvind we graduate with a party put together by all the other students and teachers on campus, Some of us stay here in Tvind to becoming teachers for the next years to come, and some go back home to teach in they only countries. But whatever we all decide to do Team 2011 has had they eyes opened to the world.
