After reading a few posts, I am curious, if a team has a roster of 24 where maybe 16 dress for a game or are allowed on a game roster, do the other say, 8 players not travel with the team?
I was under the impression that even if you are not on the roster, you had to go to away games.
Anyone?? Thanks!
Up to the coach how many he wants to travel. Everyone on D’s roster travels unless suspended, and 6 out of 22 may never see playing time. They all dress though and are all on the roster. Even the players who are injured usually travel with the team unless it is too uncomfortable to ride in the bus. Our men’s team was bigger, but they all go even though 20 or so never see playing time.
I think cost has more to do with it than whether they play or not. Air fare v bus. Overnights (hotel and food) v. day trip.
Depends on team, sport, coach – for my D3 kid, the roster is one size, and the number of kids who travel with the team for away games can be smaller than the entire roster. Some schools field a reserve squad which has its own game schedule, if there are enough players who don’t dress/travel.
Agree with @Midwestmomofboys. The NCAA has a limit for overall roster size and then most if not all conferences impose a smaller “travel roster” limit. In the sport with which I am most familiar, football, I believe travel roster sizes are generally 60-70 (the Ivy is 62, Patriot 58) while roster sizes are capped by the NCAA at 110 (except in the Ivy and I believe the service academies which are capped at 120). I believe a team may travel an unlimited number of injured players, although in my experience from way back in the day the only players who will travel are those who were on the travel roster and then were ruled medically out for the season. Usually coaches want the guys who may come back at some point to be focusing on rehab. Not sure how my son’s team deals with travelling injured players. Also, it is kinda dangerous to have injured people on a football sideline for the obvious reasons.
