Travel to Uzbekistan

Does anyone have any experience traveling to Uzbekistan? My S will be going there this spring/summer to work with an Italian research team on a site outside of Samarkand. He will be meeting them there and I’m going nuts trying to figure out all the travel options. He will be meeting a friend in Israel and traveling after he finishes working. We have the visa information, its the traveling that is confusing me. Has anyone ever flown Uzbek Air? My eldest went to Vladivostok in far eastern Russia and I thought that was tough, but this is more difficult!

I don’t have any experience, but just wanted to say cooooooool!!! Good for your S!

Cool…but very expensive! Wish Uzbek was part of some ff travel alliance! And though these are incredible opportunities, I worry the entire time they are gone…oh well, I worry when they are on campus too!

Samarkand is an incredible place, you son will love his experience (is it an archaeology dig?). I haven’t been there is n+1 years, so I’m not sure if my information will be helpful. However, I know a few folks who have relatives in that country, and they might have a more up to date scoop. Uzbek Air… do you mean Havo Yullari?

BunsenBurner, it’s Uzbekistan Airways…don’t know what it is/was. I think we’ll book a frequent flier ticket as far as we can (probably Tel Aviv) and then rt to Tashkent on Uzbekistan Airways. He and his friend will then travel (backpack) for about 5-6 weeks, ultimately returning from Amsterdam or London on the back end of the ff ticket.

I think we are talking about the same airline. If he is flying to Tashkent, he might have a choice of airlines (Russian Aeroflot also serves Tashkent, as I was told). The people I know travelled to Tashkent through Moscow or through Germany. A quick check of the Aeroflot’s schedule shows that they fly from LAX (closest to us here) to TAS through SVO (Moscow International Airport). All flights use Boeing or Airbus planes, not some old Soviet-made deathtraps. https://www.aeroflot.ru/eng/main.aspx

Here in Seattle there is a travel agency called East-West Tours (located in the city of Bothell) that specializes in the former Soviet states. They speak English.
How is your son going to get to Smarkand from Tashkent? Is his friend Uzbekistan native?

I have actually spoken to East-West and they have been very helpful. He will take the high speed train from Tashkent to Samarkand. His friend will not be with him on this leg. They are meeting in Tel Aviv when my S leaves Uzbekistan.
