Trial and Error Gardening

As harvest season approaches, there’s a timely article in the Washington Post about garden success only after trial and error. It reminded me of what I didn’t know when I first began to place container vegetable plants at home. Some of my mistakes were hilarious;

  1. When to fertilize? ('why are these dang tomatoes so small?')
  2. Regular soil in the containers ('compacted soil? What's that?)
  3. Top soil vs. garden soil. What's the difference?
  4. Overdose of synthetic fertilizer ('what's with all the leaves? Where's my squash?)
  5. Overdose of synthetic fertilizer ('what exactly does organic mean?')
  6. Overdose of organic fertilizer ('what's with all the leaves?)
  7. The seed package said "direct sunlight!"

trial and error for my yard

  1. Why did we plant all these trees so close together
  2. Why are the shrubs dying…duh…the overhead trees got too big
  3. No mint, no mint ever, ever again!
  4. Believing the greenhouse when they say the bush will only get 3 feet tall.
