If your kid did trial lessons, what feedback did they get and did positive feedback correlate with admission? My kid just got an email from the person they did a lesson with saying he hopes they apply to their program. Wondering if that’s just pro forma or a good sign….
I would say getting positive feedback after a trial lesson with encouragement to apply to a program is a good sign. It means that your musician is likely in the ballpark in terms of talent and ability such that this teacher would like to have another chance to hear them (via prescreen or audition) along with the rest of a pool of applicants.
That said, my advice (gleaned from my son who is much better at this than I am) is to temper expectations. The entire process of music school admissions is such a roller coaster. So he found it very helpful to not read too much into bits of feedback along the way. Because there are always variables out of your control (number of studio openings. applicant pool, etc)
Always nice to have a positive trial lesson. And of course the lesson is also an opportunity for
the student to trial the teacher. Definitely a two way interaction.
It was nice that the instructor gave your son some feedback. And most instructors want to encourage students to apply. BUT…it’s very early in this admissions cycle. There is no way to know the strength of other applicants who will be applying on the instrument.
That being said…if your son liked the applied teacher, he should apply.
