Any advise on getting a summer job when the student doesn’t get out of school until almost June. Ideal job would be something political but we are realistic. Thanks for any suggestions.

The student should be open to the majority of jobs. Summer jobs come with the understanding that the work is from the interval between when school gets out and begins again, usually starting sometime in May or June and ending sometime in August or September. In the case of competitive, formal internships, the starting date may be a week or two early, in which case just look at another one. There are a lot of schools on the quarter system, so I can’t imagine there could be too much trouble. If you are encountering problems even after explaining your school’s dates, you may want to try looking in areas of the country where more schools are on quarters (Northwestern and the University of Chicago in Chicago as well as many CA schools, off the top of my head).

My kid is intending to continue working at her college during the summer, but I would have suggested she do a job search during spring break to try and get employment lined up.

My daughter’s college is on the quarter system. Her college does not get out until the first week in June. Fireflyscout has it right, you must line up your jobs during the Spring break. Some employers may actually welcome a later start date because that also means a later end date. My son’s college lets out a full month earlier then my daughter’s. Is your son/daughter actively looking? At my kids colleges January and February is when local business and camps stop in at colleges looking for summer workers.

My d is also on a quarter system. It has not been a problem for jobs. Always start earlier than the pack. Many employers accept summer applications as early as October of the previous year, and spots get filled. For political interests contact your local representatives, state house, etc. Also use your own University Career and Placement Services, as the employers who hire through the school are fully aware of the dates of availability.

My S graduated from Northwestern and tried to line up a film internship in NYC in March spring break but was told it was too early to and to return when school was out. He continued to call occasionally but was told to return in person when school was done. Needless to say, most internships were filled once Northwestern classes ended. He finally found an internship in late June through our very limited contacts and not specifically in his area of interest.
