I never buy trip insurance. I have never canceled a vacation or trip BUT…we are planning a trip to Spain with friends. They are swapping their house in San Diego for a place in Spain. The husband has a medical condition. Additionally my Father has had some medical problems recently.
We are planning to go to Spain in June and then an anniversary trip to Scotland in August. I’m considering buying trip insurance for both trips. For the Spain trip the only liability is the plane flights. For the Scotland trip we have prepaid for a flat for two weeks plus the plane flights.
Anyone have experience with trip insurance? Who do we get it from? If for instance, our friend becomes more seriously ill and has to cancel will they consider that grounds for us to not go?
How does the trip insurance company view reasons for cancelling a trip?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can advise.

For a recent trip to Paris, we bought the trip insurance offered by the airline (Delta) that would cover the cost of flights. The hotel offered a very liberal cancellation policy so we did not worry too much about it. Our main concern was flights and cost. However, trip went off w/o a hitch so I can’t vouch for actually using the insurance. Hope you can get it worked out; sounds like great fun-enjoy!

Go to insuremytrip.com They have policies from many different companies and you can do side by side comparisons of prices and features. I have bought from them several times.

We bought one through American Express.

I also recommend going to insuremytrip.com.

A good thing to do is to make sure your health insurance will cover you while abroad. Many travel insurance companies also provide medical insurance and evacuation coverage. Check on pre-existing conditions coverage.

Sounds like you are going to have some wonderful trips. I’m jealous.

Thanks for the advice all. Nrdsb4: just have to figure out how to pay for it all…It looks like insuremytrip.com is going to be a good bet.

I have used insuremytrip also. I think you can get “cancel for any reason” insurance, but obviously, it will cost quite a bit more. When I traveled to the Caribbean, I always wanted the insurance that covers being airlifted home in case of a medical emergency.

When S was going with the band to Australia, I considered buying trip insurance but after reading the terms of the contract carefully, especially the exclusions and pre-existing conditions clauses, we determined that it wouldn’t provide the protection we needed so we opted NOT to purchase it.

I think you really need to read the contracts you’re considering carefully to determine whether it would provide the protection you need. For example, will it pay if you need to cancel because of something that happens with your dad? Will it pay for all the people or just your dad?

It’s always best to read about people who have had claims PAID under the policies–lots of folks buy them but not so many make claims and how much hassle they have getting paid is the big question. Sometimes travel agents have more info about which insurers have had a better/worse track record with their customers than others.

READ the ACTUAL POLICY before paying anything & ask questions BEFORE purchasing. Good luck!

There was a thread about this last summer. I did have a $1250 claim PAID for emergency medical expenses. Details in that thread.

We went to Italy this fall with my parents, one of whom is undergoing chemo, and needed to be able to cancel if counts were not good. We were recommended, and used, TravelGuard; fortunately did not need to file a claim.
