S24 was accepted to Skidmore, but he’s really concerned about the triple dorm rooms. I have seen posts from prior years, but was hoping for more recent information. Does anyone know what % of freshman end up in triples? Has the school done anything to help with the housing issue? When toured last year the triple room seemed VERY small for 3 people.
Thanks!
Hi! Parent of a current sophomore here. I would say that most but not all freshmen end up in triples - but you should certainly assume that your kid will be in one. And, as I know parents of current Skidmore students who were in triples as freshmen when THEY went to college there, I don’t think it’s changing anytime soon. Yes, it looks cramped! But they are 10 by 20 rooms with enough space for each kid to have their lofted bed with dresser underneath, desk area and closet. (I know other colleges where the triples are 10 by 15. Yikes!) Good luck to your son in making his decision. And, for what it’s worth, most of the kids I know at Skidmore love it there.
It’s true that most first-years (maybe 80%?) end up in triples, though as the other parent noted, they’re at least laid out so everybody has adequate space for their stuff. And it gets better as students advance: Sophomores get double rooms (and some singles), and many juniors and most seniors can live in on-campus apartments that are apparently pretty nice.
My kid is a current first-year and got a triple. The three roommates got along and worked out a schedule where nobody had a super-early alarm nor had lights on at 2 am or anything. One roommate moved out over winter break due to a medical issue — and there’s an understanding that in a situation like that, nobody else will take their place in a triple. (The empty bed and desk are still there, but my kid and the other roommate can claim more closet & dresser space, at least!)
Good luck to your student in making his decision! While Skidmore’s first-year dorm experience isn’t the absolute swankest, it’s a great school and welcoming community.
