I never owned a tripod, just used my shoulder to video tape. Willed myself to stay steady and it worked well enough. I am now considering to get one for the impending recording session. Is there much difference between an inexpensive model and more pricey one?

how large is the camera?
I like these cause they are adjustable ( I mostly do outdoor)

The difference would be in weight, in how adjustable it is.

It’s a digital video camera about 1" by 1" by 3". I mostly use it indoors about two three times a year. I basically set it up and record, no frequent zooming in and out or swiveling much. How do GorillaPods work? Do they sit on a table? They look like ET.

You don’t directly attached a camera to the tripod. People commonly use a ball head to connect camera to the tripod.

So, for a small video camera, the requirement is fairly low. Almost anything will do. You pick the color and material you like and price within your budget. The max and min heights, and the weight of it are also factors to consider.

On the other hand, the ball head selction is more critical. What type of quick release plate? how well could you move your camera? what is the locking machanism?

I would go to the store and let them show you a couple. Don’t let them sell you expensive one that you will not need.

A small tripod with a simple ball head should run you $50 or less on ebay.

I was at a camera store. What type of quick release plate do you recommended? I don’t forsee that I would ever need quick release. I would prefer a secure attachment to speedy release.

I would imagine you could directly attach your camera to a ball head, w/o a quick release plate. Since you are using one camera on one tripod.

Some thing like this should meet your need:

OP, I highly recommend buying photo equipment from a specialized place such as B&H - they are great. The reviews on that site are spot on because most are written by photo enthusiasts and pros, not just occasional users.

B&H is great. I got the video camera there. Is a tripod so important that one needs a specialty shop or can I get it from say Kmart?

For infrequent use and to support a tiny video camera, a Kmart tripod would be fine IMO.

You don’t need a Porsche to drive to the grocery store.

I agree, you would be OK with a $20 Kmart tripod if you do not plan to haul it around and will only use it occasionally.
