Trojan Transfer Plan (TTP) including Study Abroad Info

Great discussion about TTP’s existence and how the messaging is becoming more ambiguous. I have a daughter that graduated HS in 2023 and was rejected as a legacy.

In her letter, USC was still stating, ties to the Trojan “family,” not just community. I find it interesting that they’re blurring that clear delineation of legacy status.

The Daily Trojan just published this article about a new CA bill trying to eliminate legacy admissions. https://dailytrojan.com/2024/04/01/new-bill-could-impact-usc-legacy-admissions/ USC may be trying to stay ahead of the rumblings. The side door could be closing soon if passed.

I am trying to determine if anyone that was not admitted received a follow up letter with more details on transferring.

It’s a long email that is received if you indicate interest in attending a Trojan Transfer Information Session…but is anyone getting a letter without expressing interest?

So it would be a follow up suggesting transfer after rejection when you didn’t take any additional action or check a box?

Problem is, once folks are rejected, they usually bolt from cc.

I don’t know about this year but currently Viterbi pathways program is gone from the website. It was on there all year but recently I noticed it was gone. I am hearing everyone who was not accepted to USC was invited to attend the info session for to. Everything seems off this year compared to last year. Only pathways program still up is the Marshall pathways program. My daughter is doing the Viterbi pathways program she was offered last year and is waiting on her decision. The counselor told me the results will come out in Mid-May. If I hear anything more I will post on here.

Sorry for the typo, to=ttp

Good luck! I expect you will hear great news. I have a pretty recent Viterbi grad, what an amazing experience it was! The experiences, connections and jobs, oh my!

My D is super excited. Still nerve racking waiting for the results. She was assigned a Viterbi counselor and got help with her courses she needed to take at SMC. They did encourage her to go to SMC instead of UCSD. I think they do that for their stats of taking students from CC. Thank you for doing this for future Trojans. I really appreciate you. I might have to DM you for future advice when she gets in.:victory_hand:t2:I will come back to report when she gets her news from USC. Her counselor told me most people will hear back in May this year.

Your daughter must have had high stats to be offered ttp. I have several legacy friends whose kids did not get the TTP offer. (Their kids ended up going to SMU & TCU) although those kids had high stats too. The odd thing was that a few kids that got ttp at my daughter’s school had no ties to USC. My kid is at SMC currently and the kids that are on TTP don’t really talk about it. It’s kinda weird how they keep that hidden. Tbh, my kid doesn’t tell anyone she is on VPP too.:joy::joy: She only knows one other person on it and she is going to a cc in the Bay Area. My D also knows one person on TTP at SMC and she is a legacy (grand parents and parents). She was offered housing from USC with other ttp kids near campus and she commutes to the westside. I think TTP kids must get more perks than the VPP. This is all new to me since my husband and I went to Cal. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Was she offered USC housing or did she she choose to live in Gateway with other TTP students?

Gateway is a private apartment complex across the street from campus. In the past (starting during the pandemic, I think), USC housing rented some of the rooms from Gateway and used them as dorm rooms. Since then, Gateway has become a mix of USC Housing students and students who rent privately from Gateway. The TTP students that I know who lived there all rented privately.

Just to clarify as @lkg4answers is, TTP students were never offered USC housing prior to acceptance.

Lots of TTP attend SMCC and choose to live in Gateway to feel part of the USC scene.

She is at gateway but I guess there are USC students currently living there as well.
My D is not close friends with this girl but from the few convo they had, she seems well integrated with the USC freshman class. She is from a different state (east coast) and she was also strongly encouraged to attend SMC. This got me curious about SMC stats of sending kids to USC. I know they send the most out of all the CC but this makes me wonder just how many of the students that got in were on the plan?

We didn’t even know this was an option for my daughter. (Gateway) Luckily, we live in the westside so her going to SMC was not a problem for us. We will however need to get her housing near SC when she starts. She can commute but with her being a CS major, it’s probably best she live on or near campus. What do you think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:+1:t2:

Gateway, the Shrine Collection, Hoover House (literally steps from Target at the Village and has parking). Gateway would be more active and help you find a room mate, Hoover House it all studios, the Shrine are nice, best if you have a room mate.

I think she is hoping for a studio. She already has friends (HS) at SC but no Viterbi friends. She wants her own bathroom.:rofl::rofl: Thank you so much for so much info! She was getting stressed about housing but knowing gateway is always an option will take a lot of pressure off.:folded_hands:t2:

I wish her the best. I hope she finds something that she truly loves.

Speaking for the TTP kid, she was told about gateway housing from her TTP counselor. The VPP counselor didn’t even mention any housing to my daughter. Maybe it’s because we live in LA. I would have totally encouraged parents to take the ttp route last year because from my experience (I have another child who graduated from UCSB last year) any students who was offered ttp was given a spot at USC after a year at another institution. A lot of my older daughter’s friends went through this program with study abroad in London and Paris. Like 4 years ago, this was almost a guarantee in to USC (as long as you maintain the GPA) Now with USC offering ttp to all the kids not accepted, it seems it’s up in the air. But I am curious if there are two sets of TTP kids. One set for the classic TTP and one for the masses. It seems they totally got rid of VPP so who knows.:upside_down_face:

Just curious – I keep hearing about students who live in Gateway who go to SMC. Isn’t that a crazy-far commute? Just thinking back to my youthful adult days living in Santa Monica myself – DTLA was a hike! Are all these kids going back and forth every day out to Santa Monica for classes?

It is a drive and with traffic it’s nuts! But being “on campus” and being part of USC makes it worth it for them? They kinda still get the freshman experience I guess? That drive is still terrible and with the rains lately, a few of them got in to fender benders on the 10. I am thinking they are not from LA so they probably didn’t know the commute would be hell.

In our experience, the vast majority of TTP students who attend CC don’t have to deal with commuting to school. Their classes are online. Our son and his various TTP friends who are living near USC have never set foot on campus. Not a bad deal.

Depends on the major. The ttp kids at SMC do have to attend class in person for stem. You can’t do calc or physics online. And you need two lab credit classes.

Is your son doing ttp now and waiting? Or was this last year? That is awesome he was able to do online classes. Have you read the new ttp wording this year? My friend sent me their kids ttp and the wording has changed a lot. Just curious on your take since your son went through it. My friend is leaning towards sending her son to SMU but still doing the plan.
