We live in the zone, and it was supposed to just be a “tropical wave” and more rain. It shouldn’t be too bad but it’s weird the way it just formed and strengthened.
I feel sorry for my new neighbors. They closed on their house a few days ago. When we bought ours, there was a 30 day waiting period for home insurance to cover TS/hurricane damage if it was a new policy bought during hurricane season.

Tulane has had its share of what they call “hurrications” right after the first week of school.
We’ve had a few very minor bands come through in SW FL. No biggie so far, not much more than a slightly windier version of a summer thunderstorm. My favorite wind reading station is down (a motorboat hit the coastal marker it sits on), so I don’t know for sure what the gusts have been, but I’d be surprised if we’ve seen gusts over 40 mph here. We’re on the northeastern edge of the storm which is normally some of the highest winds, but in this case because of the direction it’s traveling and because they rotate counterclockwise, here on the west coast the effect has been lessened because the wind has come across land mass, which greatly decreases wind strength.
I will not be sad at all if it breaks up some of the horrible red tide we’ve had for the past few months. Not sure we have any fish left to die at this point.
The NHC has Gordon as a weak Cat 1 hurricane when it hits Gulfport late Wednesday night. Tropical systems don’t like wind shear aloft and this one is encountering some shear which is expected to keep it from strengthening significantly.
We were in Orlando over the weekend and the weather went downhill there significantly today. We had the typical FL afternoon thunderstorms and sun on Sat+Sun but today was cloudy with occasional rain (we flew out at 6pm).
Correction - it’ll hit Gulfport tonight around 11pm.
Here in New Orleans, it’s a pretty nice day. Partly cloudy and that’s about it so far. Last year, we were “hit” with the western edge of Nate and it never even got windy. I’m hoping for the same luck this time around.
There is a BIG area that will be hit by a tropical depression inland. I hope they don’t get significant rain in the hills and mountains of Arkansas, etc., because that can be a special kind of trouble.

We are headed to Pensacola in a few weeks. Glad it’s not this week–the webcams show it looking pretty rough out there.
