Recently I’ve been seriously confused as to which college I’m going to, though rright now I’m leaning towards UM, what do you think?

The University of Michigan has a great rep and the city is way more vibrant than Syracuse(and not nearly as cold), but it’s a humongous university. I’d be in the residential college (a small community of around 900) for 2 years, ensuring 1/3 of my classes would be ~15 people.

However, Syracuse offered me a place in thier honors program, which means small classes when i want it + privileges, and I’d only have to pay $10,000 a year out of $44,000 total, versus the $21,000 a year I’d pay for Michigan. My mother may be able to pay 10,000 a year. But it can be more or less, depending on the luck of her trade.

Is ~$45,000 a lot for my to pay off after college? How badly would it infringe upon my lifestyle?/How hard is it to pay off? At the moment, I’m not sure what I will be (careerwise), though I’m considering advertising, interior design, and spanish as majors. I really have no financial sense; please help!!

I think that if I were you, I’d go to UMich. It has rep and you’ll pay a lot less. Plus, tuition increases about a thousand each year so debt is actually higher than you think. $21,000 is a good deal :)

I’m not sure I understood the financial aspect of your situation. Is Syracuse about 10K per year less than Michigan? If Michigan is cheaper, you should definitely go there. If Syracuse is cheaper, you have a dilemma.

If you plan on graduate school, save the money, because then your UG degree is worthless, they will just ask where you got your masters. 40K in debt at graduation is much larger than normal graduates have. Michigan’s average indebtness at graduation is 22K, about half of your number. Syracuse’s average indebtness at graduation is 19K.

Sorry I never got aroudn to replying to this before…! SU is cheaper by 10k. SU also has interior design, which UM doesnt have, and I think SU also has other design majors that UM doesnt have. (I actually chose to apply to these 2 colelges cuz i thought they were big on design… but college board was wrong about UM having Interior Design, and I’m freaked out that everything else they listed under design is BS also. I can’t find another list of design majors for UM anywhere!) SU also offered me honors, so I’d get to chose my classes first and everything, which hopefully includes teachers… so that I can manage to get good grades for the next two years, before I likely will try to transfer to Cornell or Carnegie Mellon. (I hope!) Then again, Ann Arbor is supposed to be a great colelge town, and the East Quad is supposed to be full of really cool people, so there I will have less personal attention and probably a better quality of life for the next two years. But is it worth another 10k/yr… And will I get lower grades there? I wonder…

Syracuse:
Positives:
-11K per year
-Has your major
-Easier to get a high GPA and transfer
-In honors
Negatives:
-Not as quality of a school
-Not as good of a town

Michigan
Positives:
-Residential College/East Quad
-Good town
-Great school
Negatives:
-21K per year
-Doesn’t have your major
-Hard to get good grades

I think Syracuse wins. It will be easier, less expensive, and you can do your major. And it’s still a pretty sweet school to some. Michigan is great, but missing what you are looking for in a college.

wow.
thank you! So it’s easier to get good grades at Syracuse, hm… How did you find that out??? (Do you know what the avg GPA is for SU students the first 2 years? And also for SU honors students? Thanks!)

syracuse can be hard too. youre making it seem like its not a good school.

Yeah, it’s not that it’s easy to get good grades anywhere. However, Michigan is cut-throat, almost ivy league. Syracuse is competitive, but not nearly that competitive.
