Hey all, for the “Requirements For A Bachelor’s Degree” portion of the UCI catalogue, there is a list of classes for each category of our general education requirements (like I. Writing, II. Science and Technology etc) When the catalogue lists the different classes in each category, for some classes they use dashes while for others they use commas. For example in Arts and Humanities, Arts is listed as Art 1A-B, C and Studio Art is listed as Studio Art 1A-B-C, 9A, 9B, 9C or 11A. Can anyone tell me if there is anything significance/meaning about the dashes and commas?

i think that the dashes indicate that they are a series and u can’t take studio art 1B without having taken sudio art 1A. whereas the commas, indicate that you can take the classes in no particular order.

A sequence requires you to take all of them in sequence. For example, you must finish Physics 7A before you can register for 7B. Same with 7B and 7D. (I do understand they changed the physics courses recently, but this is just an example).

You sometimes have to look at specific course prerequisites. Arts 1A-B, C is an example. The dash means you have to take Arts 1A as a prerequisite to Arts 1B, but does the comma mean you can take Arts 1C without taking Arts 1A and 1B? In this case, Arts 1A is a prerequisite to Arts 1C, but Arts 1B is not. It’s a good idea to pay attention to prerequisites for courses you want or have to take, especially in your major.
