Anyone who saw MTV’s True Life: I’m a Staten Island Girl should read this.

Hello all. I know some of you saw, MTV’s True Life: I’m a Staten Island Girl. I also know that because of it, many of you think that we are all tanning-salon orange, club-hopping, foul-mouthed people who tawk like dis. I also think that some people forget that we are even one of the 5 boroughs of one of the greatest cities in the world. I am here to set the record straight about my hometown.

By MTV’s standards, I am the furthest thing from a Staten Islander. I don’t drink or party every night. The closest I have come to tanning myself was sitting in the upper deck of Yankee Stadium this past July. I don’t shoot my mouth off, nor do I talk in a thick New York accent. I’m not even Italian or Roman Catholic. Yet I am a lifelong Staten Islander. Most people don’t think I’m a Staten Islander and would never suspect it unless I tell them. For this reason, I consider myself to be a rebuttal to all of the stereotypes put fourth in MTV’s supposedly “True” Life.

In conclusion, I hope that my persona sheds some light on this issue and that next time you tune in to MTV’s true life or any kind of documentary fueling stereotypes, remember that they are not really true.

Every different “social class”, or “ethnicity” has its sterio types that arn’t accurate. I’m hispanic, everyone has preconceived notions of what i “am”, and what i “should” do… i feel your pain:)

I almost never party and I seldom drink. I even consider myself to be a bit introverted. People always talk about how quiet I am. However, I am not some outcast w/no friends or no life. I know plenty of kids who party and drink, but that’s just not me. I have my friends and they have theirs. They may be bragging about how much 100 proof liquor they can drink, but we’ll see who’s laughing when we get the college acceptance letters ;).

(Yes I admitted it, some Staten Island teens are party animals, but doesn’t every town have them?)

MTV is a lame excuse for a channel. it gives bad reps to just about every place it covers, and certainly does not represent in any shape or form the people who live there. I try to keep that in mind.

Well jPoD, if that’s what you think, then that’s your opinion. I can’t take away someone’s freewill, I’m just trying to use myself as an example to show that not everyone from Staten Island is an idiot/carouser/pumpkin-orange tanner.

Staten Island is not the same anymore in matter of fact it is equivalently diverse as much as other boroughs and just because one is from SI it doesn’t mean that one is italian or catholic. Also Staten Island is not like a cellar or whatever that girl says, it depends on Staten Island fulfilling your needs pertaining to the case of “I have to find a way to get off this Island”
