Does anyone know if Truman State University will offer other scholarships such as the Truman Leadership Scholarship to the Pershing Scholarship finalists that do not actually receive the Pershing?

Congratulations for being a Pershing finalist! I am one too! I’m hoping our letters will come any day now. As to your question, I initially thought that the Pershing finalists would have the opportunity to receive the Truman Leadership scholarship which is a full-ride as well. However, my friend was notified around three weeks ago that she had received one of the Leadership scholarships so I believe that they already gave those out. However, I am unsure as to why they wouldn’t have waited to first hand out the Pershing scholarships if that is indeed the top scholarship. But even if we don’t receive the Pershing I believe we are still in the running for other competive scholarships and will be notified in mid-March. I just don’t think that we have another opportunity to get a full-ride.

Hope this helps!

Well, I was a Pershing finalist and went down for the interview in the first week of February. I just got my letter that told me that I didn’t get the Pershing scholarship; however, I did get a nice Presidential Leadership scholarship. I also think that anyone else who doesn’t get the Pershing Scholarship is still eligible for more competitive scholarships in March.

I’m a current Pershing Scholar at Truman, a senior. I’m 99% sure that if you are not offered the scholarship but you are a finalist, you still receive a full-ride. You don’t get membership in the Pershing Society or the Study Abroad stipend, but I think you get everything else.

Congrats, good luck, and hope you come to Truman!

I was a finalist for the Pershing Scholarship last year (in 2009), and I chose not to complete the process and interview for the award. That decision was due to a variety of reasons, not the least of which was a conflict with completing my Eagle Scout project on the same day as the interview. Living in a suburb of Chicago, that meant that doing both was impossible. This does not, however, reflect in any way upon the quality of the Pershing Scholarship program at TSU. I do know though, that being a finalist does not give you a full ride. However, the same attributes (grades, test scores, extracurriculars, etc.) that qualify students for finalist status for the Pershing will qualify these students for other scholarship from Truman. I received the President’s Honorary, Presidential Leadership, and President’s Combined Ability Scholarships.
