I’m new to this thread so i apologize in advance if I’m posting in the wrong section. I was left a trust fund for college by my Grandmother. In her Will it states that the money can only be used for school and school related items. I am currently enrolled in a commercial diving school and am having trouble getting to and from school from my housing. I don’t have a car so I would like to purchase one with my trust fund money to use for transportation to and from school. Can this be considered a school related item?. Your help is greatly appreciated!

You need to ask the administrator of the trust if this would be an allowable expense for the trust to pay.

It is VERY possible that they won’t view commercial “diving” (guessing you meant driving" school to be college at all. If that is the case, any expense related to this will not be an allowable expense in all likelihood.

You need to talk to the person administering the trust to see what your grandmother’s intentions were when she set it up. If she clearly stated COLLEGE expenses only, you may have to actually use this money for COLLEGE, not some other kind of post graduate studies.

We have been involved with family trust issues. The terms of the trust should be clearly stated. There should be someone in charge of determining what to disburse, as well as the criteria. Talk to that person.

Yes I know this but I’m just looking for an outside prospective before I commit to asking my Trust Advisor.

Luciano…I added to my post. But really, the only one with specific answers about the terms of YOUR trust situation is the trust admin.

Be advised…very often the terms of the trust can NOT be changed.

I did mean “diving”. I’m being trained in underwater welding, construction and things of that sort. My tuition has already been paid in full by the trust and i was also able to receive money for diving equipment which makes me believe that transportation is not that far fetched of a request.

That someone would be the trustee, and this is good advice. Understand what the trust document says, and have a talk with the trustee. Is the trustee a family member?

Well, a very distant family member who I’ve never actually met before

Ah! Well…talk to that trustee. They may not be willing to buy you a car, but they might be willing to help you pay to rent a room within walking distance of your school.

Also, this may sound like a silly question…but it is likely one you will need to answer.

When you enrolled in this program, how did you THINK you would get to it from your current housing? And what are you doing in the interim…is there public transportation you can use?
