Trying to get from LA to Santa Barbara-- is it possible through public transportation

<p>A friend of our’s has a girlfriend who takes train to visit family near ucsb for the weekend. Friend drives up for brunch and brings her home. I think she leaves from OC but it stops in LA.</p>

<p>You could probably take Greyhound or Amtrak for fairly cheap.</p>

<p>Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner goes to the Santa Barbara area from the greater Los Angeles area, e.g. you can get on at Union Station (downtown Los Angeles), Chatsworth (San Fernando Valley), etc. UCSB is in Goleta, north of Santa Barbara - the station code for that station is GTA.</p>

<p>There are a few options as several people have mentioned. The greyhound station is located right next to the transit center for the local bus line. You could walk out the door of the bus station and get on a bus that will take you directly out to UCSB. The amtrak has two stations. One downtown SB and another tiny station out in Goleta. It might be easier to get a bus to UCSB from the downtown station.
The Santa Barbara Airbus is also an option. You could pick it up at LAX. They have a couple of drop off points. The last stop is in Goleta not far from UCSB.

<p>I looked around a bit and the greyhound is pretty cheap and doesn’t seem to take all that much longer then driving. The advantage of the greyhound is that you would be able to take an express bus out to UCSB from the transit center next door.
With the amtrak it looks like you would have to first take a bus to the transit center and then a 2nd bus out to UCSB.</p>

If you are trying to get to UCSB for Halloween, please reconsider and stay home.
If you are going for other reasons, mom60 has it spot on. If you take amtrak it is a bit of a hassle to get from the train station to UCSB unless you can afford a cab. The station at Goleta is not really a station, just a platform with a small parking lot. If you were going to take a cab you should call ahead and prearrange to have one waiting there for you.</p>

<p>I rode one bus all the way from Santa Barbara airport to downtown Santa barbara & my hotel ( which you couldn’t do in Seattle )
There were also students from UCSB on the bus- but didn’t pay attention to where they got off.
I would probably take the shuttle from LAX and see if UCSB has a shuttle from airport or take the public transit.</p>
