TSRI or UCSD

Can I get help on deciding between TSRI (Scripps) and UCSD ? Looking into chemistry / biochemistry.

When considering any program, first check to see if there are multiple investigators that you would be interested in working with. Why? If you have only one or two favorites, those labs may be filled. In addition, you are looking at an entire training environment.

Second, check the outcome of graduates from each program. Are the outcomes (career choices acheivements) consistent with your goals.

Third, there are pros and cons of being at a research institute versus a university. The atmospheres of these two kind of environments are very different. You need to determine which type of environment you prefer.

for chem tsri.

Thanks for the responses. My interests are in biophysics. I am interested in the research of many investigators at both of these institutions, which is why I am so torn between them.

I want to make sure that I go to an institution that will best prepare me for a career in academia.

I agree that the training environment will play a major role in my preparation. I know that UCSD will have more resources in terms of access to a larger student body, teaching opportunities, and funding mechanisms. I know TSRI has great science and has TAships too.

What are your opinions on what institution can better train students for a career in academia? Or should I not even worry about this issue, and focus on working in a laboratory that most interests me?

Investigate the outcome for graduates of each of the programs. See which kind of outcomes most matches your goals. You can usually get some of this information from the graduate admissions office.
