Hoping it doesn’t amount to much, for anyone.

Most of the west coast is under a Tsunami WATCH (yellow on map), and we likely still have several hours for scientists to gather data before they determine the threat level.

Hoping @HImom and anyone else possibly impacted are all safe and stay that way.

I have a very good friend in Honolulu. She said she is doing her laundry in preparation.
I told her to take a pic of her passport to save to the cloud and keep it with her if she needs to evacuate, and to wear a pair of walking shoes.

From Redwood Coast Tsunami Workgroup

The National Tsunami Warning Center has placed the entire West Coast of the US in a tsunami ADVISORY. They have confirmed that a tsunami was generated by today’s M8.7 near Kamchatka but the impacts in our area will be localized in bays, harbors, and beaches. This is not a good night to go on a midnight fishing trip or sleep on the beach, but the impacts will be restricted to areas below the high tide level.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has placed Hawaii in a tsunami WARNING. Officials will be coordinating evacuations from areas in Hawaii deemed at risk.

Crescent City was one of the worst affected locations in 1964 too:

Our friends (parents & two young adult kids) just flew to Tokyo. They left yesterday, but a ground stop resulted in their direct flight being cancelled. They were able to fly to LA and get a flight to Tokyo. Their luggage stayed behind, though. And now they are in a tsunami zone, I assume (I know “Japan” is in the zone, but I am not sure about Tokyo specifically). Their vacation is off to quite a start.

Upgraded to warning for northern parts of NorCal

827 PM PDT Tue Jul 29 2025

…THE TSUNAMI WARNING IS MODIFIED TO INCLUDE THE COASTAL
AREAS OF CALIFORNIA FROM CAPE MENDOCINO CALIFORNIA TO THE
OREGON/CAL. BORDER…

If you are located in this coastal area, move inland
to higher ground.

Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant
inundation is possible or is already occurring. Tsunamis are
a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival
time. The first wave may not be the largest.

From CNN:

“Eurasia’s highest volcano has erupted after the earthquake in the Kamchatka region of Russia’s far east, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

At 4,750 meters (15,580 feet), Klyuchevskaya Sopka is one of the world’s highest active volcanos.

Tourists who had traveled to the area of the volcano have not canceled their tours and instead want to stay to watch the eruption, RIA reported, citing the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RUTI).”

Very glad this earthquake and the tsunami that followed have not caused major damage! Appears that the warning systems worked as intended. Although I hear some local grumblings that the evacuations and closures of beaches etc. were all for nothing. Idiots.

They are still advising people in San Diego today to be cautious at the beaches just in case.

We have been vacationing in one of the affected areas on the California coast, right accross the street from the beach. Last night a police car was driving slowly down the street, with their loud speaker telling everyone to get off the beach immediately due to Tsunami concerns. Of course they were ignored by a few, but for the most part the beaches I could see from our house were pretty deserted.

To get to the beach from our house, you must take a staircase about 20 feet down, so I wasn’t worried about our personal safety. From what I’ve heard, our region got only a 4 foot wave, so all is good.

If this were a movie, just as everyone was breathing a sigh of relief, Godzilla or a giant Kraken or such would emerge from the crack in the ocean floor.

We’re exactly one mile from the ocean but 200 feet above sea level.
