DS was part of one this afternoon and we’re glad we were there to see it.
High school students, alumni of our district, community players up to age 82!!
Euphonium and tubas, maybe 60 in all
The audience sang along and some even danced.
For us, funny to see the tuba so celebrated rather than hiding in the back of the orchestra.

My son-in-law sometimes participates in one (he’s usually trumpet player.) I think it might have been in that town you and I grew up in (which coincidentally, so did he–even though D met him in North Jersey), though I might be making that up.

I still remember the sousaphones of the UW marching band walking the circumference of the field during games- the oom-pa-pa was fun to hear as were the antics. They no longer do this but that band now does a 5th quarter. I remember getting boring tuba parts as a HS bassoon player- not a marching instrument (we were in the color guard, or I played clarinet- my first instrument- for indoor games, required part of band in my HS back then). It seemed they used tubas/sousaphones just to carry the beat, sigh. A real tuba concert would be fascinating.

My brother is a tuba player and plays in Tuba Christmas. He’s across the country so I can’t see him perform, but I love brass so I’ve seen other Tuba Christmases.

Something special and extra Christmasy about brass music this time of year.
Our town hosts a first night and my favorite performance is the brass quintet in one of the beautiful old churches downtown.

This was only the second game I’ve been to. Bought tickets from a colleague. Pretty pricey but I pointed out to my wife that we pay more to go to a show in Chicago, and the game was longer. Actually the game seemed endless what with all the TV timeouts.

DH and I watch CBS Sunday morning together each week.
Happy to see the segment on Tuba Christmas today.
It had clips from Wichita and Washington DC, maybe others.

We also enjoyed the segment on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
One woman was performing this year for the last time as they apparently have a mandatory retirement after 20 years. Who knew?
