Tufts student journal publishes satirical song ridiculuing blacks

"MEDFORD, Massachusetts (AP) – A conservative, student-run journal at Tufts university published a satirical Christmas carol that ridiculed black students and campus affirmative action policies, then issued an apology after some students called on the school to stop funding the journal.

The carol, entitled, “O Come All Ye Black Folk,” was published in the most recent edition of the Primary Source, which bills itself as “the journal of conservative thought at Tufts University.”

The parody of “O Come All Ye Faithful” calls black people “boisterous” and proclaims, “Born into the ghetto. O Jesus! We need you now to fill our racial quotas.”

The lyrics also say, “No matter what your grades are, F’s, D’s or G’s, give them all privileged status.”

Douglas Kingman, the journal’s news editor, said the satire was intended to call attention to affirmative action policies that he and other magazine staffers feel are unfair…

"
University administrators condemned the carol’s publication as “irresponsible,” but also stopped short of advocating censorship.

About 8,500 students are enrolled at Tufts, with black students making up about 7 percent of the undergraduate population."

It just goes to show you can go to an “elite” college and still be racist, develop no empathy, lack an understanding of what is funny, and be as dumb as a pile of manure.

Douglas Kingman…what a …

Glad he has “a feeling”. Can’t blame other students for “feeling” they shouldn’t have to pay for it.

This is even worse than A&M.

I guess this idiot think it is fair to demean black students.

Here is the original:

O Come All Ye Black Folk

O Come All Ye Black Folk
Boisterous yet desirable
O come ye, O come ye to our university

Come and we will admit you
Born into oppression
O come let us accept them
O come let us accept them
O come let us accept them
Fifty-two black freshmen

O sing gospel choirs
We will accept your children
No matter what your grades are F’s, D’s, or G’s
Give them privileged status
We will welcome all

O come let us accept them
O come let us accept them
O come let us accept them
Fifty-two black freshmen

All come! Blacks we need you
Born into the ghetto
O Jesus we need you now to fill our racial quotas
Descendants of Africa with brown skin arriving

O come let us accept them
O come let us accept them
O come let us accept them
Fifty-two black freshmen

In the same spirit as those madcap zanies at the Primary Source, I thought it might be useful to publish what the staff would actually like for Tufts’ admissions staff to sing for the holidays.

O Come All Ye Prepsters

O come all ye prepsters
J. Crewed and Versace’d
O come ye, O come ye
To Pa-- ar – radise!

Come and behold it
For the best of families
No color in the classrooms
No color in the dorm rooms
The color’s got the push brooms
Pa – ar – radise!

Sing for field hockey
Sing for polo ponies
Sing for your ancestors
Mayflower’s the thing
Sing for your birthrights
Sing for racial purity

O come you will adore it
The Afros all deplore it
Which makes it perfect for us
Pa – ar – radise!

All Hail, Tufts the beacon
Home for Ivy rejects
We know you really wanted
To go to Yale
But just consider
Yale has some minorities

You wouldn’t like it much there
There’s pepper in the salt there
You’re better off with us here
Pa – ar – adise!

Tarhunt: I am sorry, but I will ask the MODS to remove your post with Tuft lyrics.

It is racist, crude, uncalled for and a number of other negative things. I don’t like it but I don’t like censorship either. Posting text of an existing document is different than using a quote for support of an unacceptable position. Allow people to see what was said and make up their own minds as to how bad it is that some Tufts students found this funny.

Northstarmom,
I find this “parody” despicable. Yes, I’m against censorship in general. But how about those brilliant student minds at Tufts exhibiting a little “self-censorship?”

Censorship isn’t the issue. Why should students be REQUIRED to pay for this stuff?

http://www.tuftsprimarysource.org/

Was that a true apology? “The Primary Source believes that it is important to make clear that policies of racial preferences are a harmful perpetuation …” is probably what they 'really" meant.

I think they should be required to take Writing 101 (again).

Because its a commentary on “affirmative action” and on how minorities (in this case, blacks) get in with less grades, no doubt written by an upset white kid who didn’t get in to Princeton because “some URM took my spot.” I mean sure go ahead and disagree with it, but dont start a riot because someone doesnt like such policies.

I think both of those songs are funny as hell! Lighten up people! Humor apparently is absent from your lives.

(before you say that race is something that cannot be joked about, who the eff says it can’t. some of the funniest humor out there is racial.)

From the tufts primary source non “apology”

“Knowing what we know now about the misinterpretation of the carol, we would not have published it in its present form.”

Not so much a ‘sorry for what I said’ more of a ‘sorry you took offense at it’ . Wow. Well the carol does not read to me as anti-racist - it reads as flat out racist. Sorry if the people at tufts primary source take offense at that - by which I mean - no I’m not sorry at all.

This is no satire; it’s slimy racist garbage. IMO it’s verbal assault against minority students and goes far beyond being “irresponsible”.

You people are some of the most uptight I have ever heard in my entire life.

It is of poor taste and not desireable as they are labelling all Afro american people with single brush of stroke. The way Tufts can counter by showing famous AA graduates who have benefitted with these policies.

I am against censorship since Tufts University has to draw a line. If Tufts university start policing the free rights, then they have to be consistent in censorship across the board. And that is a very very tricky situation and open to leagal challenge.

mini:

Many famous Rappers produces song that ask to ki** the cops. They make zillions of dollars. There is a huge fanclub base and they buy the CDs. There is no censorship even though most people will agree that the song they ask are wrong. Who buys these song. It involves major music producers.

It is a delicate quuestion. Many lawsuits have been files but nothing happened. Such is freedom of speech.
I myself do not know where to draw the line.

It is sad that few student are using this kind of act under freedom of speech.

The thing is, you are all ignoring the fact that while the carol has put it in more unpleasent terms, it is true, as the standards for minorities at colleges are much lower than for whites and asians. A lot of people disagree with this, and I see nothing wrong with that.

Oh, I understand. If folks want to BUY the paper, that’s their prerogative. But why should it be subsidized with student funds?
