Hi, I am a Canadian student considering going to the US for my undergrad. I have gotten into several schools, but have narrowed the list down to Tufts, Tulane, or McGill. I am trying to decide based on a few factors: social scene, opportunities to get into elite masters programs, GPA inflation, and party atmosphere. I am curious as to whether it is better when applying to masters programs to be at a school with a possibly higher reputation (Tufts) but where I may have a lower GPA OR a school with a slightly less reputation (Tulane) but where I could have a higher GPA? I know for a fact it is basically impossible to achieve a decent GPA at McGill, but as a Canadian, I am unsure of how American schools (specifically those I have noted) mark students. From the students of the schools themselves, how do you like it, what are the cons and pros? I want real answers from real students as the choice is extremely difficult. Any help would be great!
McGill will serve you as well for grad school admission, don’t worry about that.
Do it purely on fit. As Tulane’s middle 50% SAT is 1440-1540 and they admitted only 17% of applicants, I think that any expectation of a higher GPA is speculative at best. Desire for a higher GPA is a bad reason to attend a school. That being said, if there is something about the academics, atmosphere, and opportunity of Tulane, Tufts or McGill that especially appeals to you, you should follow your heart and go where you will be happy. Your grades will take care of themselves.
