I am interested in studying for MS Computer Science while working. I am considering the following 4 schools. Can you please rank these schools based on their reputation in computer science area.

Tufts University

Boston University (Metropolitan College)

Northeastern University

WPI

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean, “while working”? Do you intend to be a part time student? Of the four, Northeastern has the co-op program which, after the first semester of your sophomore year, allows you to take up to 6 months off while working full time (co-op.) If indeed you intend to attend school part-time, you need to check each school’s admissions policies whether that is allowed.

As to rankings, here they are:

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I intend to be part time student. I am currently working full time as software developer. I already have a BSCS degree and want to study for MSCS. I guess co-op program doesn’t matter since I already have a job.

What I want is the best academics and name recognition out of these four schools for MS degree. All four schools allow part time study.

^He/she will be getting a masters degree. I assume it’s fairly common to attend part-time for that. As to the specific programs, I can’t really help on that one.

Did you get more information about those colleges?

Actually, I’m in the same position as you and would like to get more information about MS programs in those colleges…

You might want to post this question in the graduate school forum, go back to the main discussion page and scroll down until you get to the Graduate School forum.

For MSCS:

Northeastern CS department is better than Tufts CS dept but Tufts has better overall reputation as a University. BU offers MSCS via their night school (Metropolitan College) which is separate from their regular CS department whose standards for admission are not as strict as for their regular program.

So, in my opinion:

NEU

Tufts

BU

Choose a school that offers the same courses to both full time and part-time students that will ensure same standard for both full time and part time study. Tufts, NEU and WPI do that. BU doesn’t.

All of these CS schools are second tier schools so if you are studying for a part-time degree, it will not matter that much which school you attend. Chose a program that you like and it offers courses of your interest. I chose Tufts by the way (based on the type of CS courses typically offered).
