HOBY alternate

NYU is very popular recently, so it is hard to get into, but Tufts is still a better school and still has a stronger applicant pool, so it is even harder.
You have solid chances at both and both are great, so if you get into either you can’t lose.
Good luck.

thanks  … bump

…there’s no comparison between the two schools- they are completely different in tone, class sizes, social community, academic support, and of course, “sense of place”.

My son is at Tufts, and I have a step-son at NYU. Both are happy at their respective schools, and I can safely say the neither would be happy at the opposite school. NYU has no campus to speak of, and is spread throughout lower Manhatten. My stepson’s dorm last year was a converted city hotel. He always dreamed on being in NYC, and he finally got his chance, but there are times is has been overwhelmed and somewhat isolated in the big, expensive city.

On the other hand my son is at Tufts. He loves the campus, as well as the accessibility to Boston. He is active in the outdoors club, and recently availed himself of discount tickets for Tufts students to a Celtics game. He loves his courses (he’s a bio major) and has a tight group of friends. He feels very identified as a Jumbo, whereas my stepson feels no real connection to NYU.

When my son faces vacations from Tufts, he misses the school. When my stepson faces vacations from NYU he can’t wait to escape the city for awhile.

Tufts’ matriculation took place on the quad, and President Bacow said that the next time the class of 2011 would gather together on the quad would be at graduation. The campus will be beautiful, and the students will be surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of their four incredible years at Tufts. They will also be within eyesight and earshot of their friends and families.

Next May, NYU’s graduation will be held at the new Yankee Stadium, where my wife and I will be lucky to catch a glimpse of her son among the tens of thousands of graduates. There will be no sense of NYU community or history. (And the date of graduation has already been changed once to accomodate the Yankees schedule).

I’m biased. If I had to do it all over again, I’d choose Tufts in a heartbeat. Fortunately, my son will not have to worry about “doing it all over again”. In fact, his only worry is that the time is passing way too quickly, and there is still too much he wants to do and experience at Tufts.

If you’re a city person - a NYC person - NYU offers a unique experience. If you want the full benefits of a small university, with a campus on a hill, and close proximately to all that a city offers, choose Tufts. It all comes down to a question of fit.

But I think my bias shows in this response! Go Jumbos!

Great reply TheOldProf. S. fells the same way about Tufts. Time is passing too fast and he loves the feeling of Tufts. He is home for the holidays and he says he has never been happier, great grades, great friends and great school.

wow theoldprof…thanks for such an insightful reply

the thing is tufts is much farther from home than NYU…thats probably going to make me decide not to apply to tufts as NYU is on par academically with tufts, which is what matters most to me…also, i don’t think i would mind the city life :)
