Tufts - wacko aid system?

Hi,

According to the FAFSA and SAR, my EFC is $13,000 on a 30k odd income, due to some investments. I applied for aid in Tufts and this is what I got:

Total Expenses $48,000.00
Family Contribution $37,500.00
Need $10,500.00

I cant see as to how on earth I am going to pay 37k, it is IMPOSSIBLE. What can I do about it? My EFC is only a 13k… compared to what they make it :(

Thanks,
Antarius

anyone?
bump…

Well, I don’t know that much about financial aid, but here is what I would do. Since you cannot possibly pay that sum of money, you should make a financial aid appeal. You have nothing to lose in my opinion. They either reject your appeal or meet more of your need. Make sure you explain them that the EFC (the one that the college expects you to bring) is bigger than your income and other stuff like that.

and should I call them up for this or email them? How do you do the appeal?

Tufts looks at your entire FA picture suing information from both the FAFSA and the CSS profile. so while your parents may only “earn” 30,000 (which is reported to the IRS) they could still have extensive income/assets.

Sounds like your family may have some pretty hefty investments. If not, request a financial review

Assets we have are stock… the precise amount I am not sure of. I meant, the salary is 30k odd…

They expect a percentage of assets to be sold to contribute to college each year, not just income. The percentage stays the same each year, but as the assets are reduced, the amount you are expected to pay each year is reduced (not accounting for tuition increases).

Tufts is a piece of poo when it comes to aid. Despite my father dying and zero income, and assets that don’t really amount to anything huge, they wanted like 30k a year from us. Stupid stupid stupid.

damn it… Im in a wayy better life situation than you legendofmax… that means my aid is gonna be worse…

I am going to appeal though…

any other explainations???

Have you called the financial aid office yet? I couldn’t tell by your other posts, but my boyfriend is going to Tufts next year, and they were amazing for him in terms of financial aid, and very helpful when he called the office (which was often). I think before you do anything, it would probably be best to know where Tufts stands on the issue, it could have been a mistake, or they could have an explanation. Either way, it should give you more information to work with when making your appeal.

thanks, i have emailed them and will be calling them today
