Tuition Hike

Tuition was raised to $50,300.00 for fall 2010. For that money they should provide the beer!

Actually, tuition is now $39,480. Finaly costs are variable based on on-campus vs. off-campus housing, meal plan, travel needs, etc.

what % increase is that?

The average cost of room and board increased $320 for the 2010-2011 school year, making it $10,520.

With the increase in tuition and the increase in room and board, the tuition for the 2010-2011 school year will be $50,300, including the technology fee.

Actual increase in tuition is 3%–but total cost to attend is $50,300.

jah, so then this statement is wrong:

“With the increase in tuition and the increase in room and board, the tuition for the 2010-2011 school year will be $50,300, including the technology fee.”

I don’t know if it is wrong, I just cut and pasted from the website.

I have not taken that much time to look at it in details–if my daughter is admitted and the offer doesn’t come with a sizable merit award, it doesn’t matter what % tuition or housing increased, we cannot afford an all-in cost in excess of $50,000.

TOTAL COST TO ATTEND includes:

Books and Supplies
Lab Fee
Miscellaneous
Room and Board
Technology Fee
Tuition

This is directly from my financial aid page on the lehigh portal. TUITION for this year was $38,330.00.

ROOM was $2,955.00 PER SEMESTER
The average meal plan for first year students costed: $2,095.00 PER SEMESTER

They figure Books and Supplies at around $1,000. I paid about $600 in books last semester and about $400 this semester. (And I probably bought more than I had to anyway…). But anyway that figure seems about right.

Also, I heard this from someone way back in the beginning of the school year:
The cost of attendance is about $50,000 per year to students. But actually it costs about $100,000 to the university to provide services, pay for fixed costs, pay salaries, etc. Thank the Alumni donators.

also: the 3% increase is actually fairly minimal. sometimes tuition has gone up 5% per year (or even more at some schools)–i think this shows that lehigh is really trying to not jerk families around considering the current economic situation.

you should also think about public vs. private school value when considering the tuition–you pay a lot more for private school, but you also get a lot more. talking to friends at public schools, i was surprised at how much some of their living costs are compared with mine at lehigh–ask around about things like this before making a decision.
