Subject: The cost of attendance for continuing Caltech undergraduates in the 2006-2007 academic year

We are writing to inform you of the cost of attendance for continuing
Caltech undergraduates in the 2006-2007 academic year, to describe
changes in the board program and financial aid self-help levels, and to
provide some of the background regarding these changes.

The annual cost of attendance will increase by 4.1% from $41,019 to
$42,681. Tuition, including the premium for student health insurance,
will be $28,515. Mandatory student fees will be $1,080 in order to fund
student services and programs, House activities, ASCIT dues, and other
student activities. While last year we bundled student fees within
tuition, now we have begun to delineate tuition and fee expenses to make
the costs more transparent.

Undergraduate housing rates will increase 3.5% to $5,187. Board will be
$5,121, which reflects the introduction of a new board plan beginning in
the fall term 2006; declining balance and waited dinners in the Houses
will continue to be offered. It is estimated that the cost of books and
supplies will be $1,077, and miscellaneous expenses will be $1,701.

Starting in 2006-2007, we will increase the self-help levels for all
financial aid recipients in order to continue to meet our goals of
offering need-blind admissions and providing financial assistance to all
eligible students. Financial aid recipients will be expected to
contribute up to a maximum of $5,250 to their educational costs from
work and loans. In accordance with federal regulations, students will
retain the flexibility to switch work and loans as they see fit in order
to meet their obligations.

These changes were decided upon after careful consideration of the
Institute’s expenses associated with the education of undergraduate
students. We realize that you may have questions and concerns about
these increases. We intend to invite you to attend a Town Hall
conversation in January for an open discussion of the changes taking
place in tuition, fees, room, board, and self-help as well as any other
changes that you would like to discuss.
