I only live 4 miles from a city in Washington and it only takes me 10 minutes by car to get there. I have a 4.0 GPA, am a first generation student, and am of a minority ethnicity. I plan on majoring in nursing. Our EFC is in the 200s. Would it be possible to negotiate with the University of Washington financial aid office to ask for a discount?
*I haven’t got accepted into the school yet as decisions doesn’t come out until March/April, so I don’t have my financial aid package yet but I am curious about getting a tuition discount.
What state are you in? Does you state NOT have nursing programs?
Your EFC is $200? Is that correct?
Public schools are supported in part by tax dollars paid by people who reside in the state. I can’t imagine you would get a tuition break just for living close to the state. Have you looked at your in-state option?
There are schools that give reduced tuition to those living close to the state border (e.g. Youngstown State University in Ohio for students in western Pennsylvania) or within a regional agreement (e.g. the Western University Exchange; see https://wuesavingsfinder.wiche.edu/search-results.php ). However, University of Washington does not appear to be such a school. But also, even reduced tuition from such an arrangement may not come with in-state levels of financial aid, so it may still be unaffordable.
The state of Washington does have several universities in the Western University Exchange, although it appears that none offer the reduced tuition for nursing.
Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Or when rappers have to rhyme…
Did you run the Net Price Calculator on UWs web site? You should have done that before you applied.
What is your home state?
How much will your family pay?
What are your stats?
It’s silly to pay more for a BSN since you won’t be paid more for a school name.
So…if it’s so close…has your family considered moving to Washington State? If not…why?
If they move NOW and you take a gap year, you probably would have instate status at UW.
If the family insists on living in a neighboring state…then look at nursing programs in the state in which you reside!
Yes, if you live in an adjacent state (not BC, Canada), you may receive discounted tuition under a Western States agreement if the University of Washington participates. Might be WUE, not sure. At least some Washington state schools participate, just not certain about UW.
If it is WUE, I think that may be Western University Exchange.
No UW campus is 4 miles from a border.
@TomSrOfBoston : You misread OP’s post.
Just checked WUE website. 15 Western states participate. Unfortunately, the University of Washington does not participate. But Washington State, Western Washington, Evergreen State & Central Washington do participate.
I believe @ucbalumnus posted above that the Washington public universities that DO participate in WUE! NONE participate for their nursing programs.
And U W doesn’t participate…at all.
You are out of luck on this. Have you applied to any of your in state schools with nursing programs?
Once more…if you ONLY live four miles away from the Washington State boarder…why doesn’t your family move to…Washington State…if getting instate tuition is that important. You would need to take a gap year but still…
Either that…or apply in your own state.
When state colleges and universities offer in-state rates for sudents from bordering counties in other sates, that information is right on the website. There will be a statement on the tition page along the lines of “residents of stateX, and counties A, B, and C in stateY”. The key factor is proximity. From the institution’s point of view, These are students who might be able to comute or whose families would have been likely to have been doing a lot of business across that state line for years. This type of discount usually doesn’t apply at other colleges and universities in the state.
