Tulane Class of 2024 DHS, PTA, Stamps

I hear ya, @gratefulmama . It’s my daughter’s #1, too. She got the $4k bump. But the difference between Tulane and University of Maryland even without scholarships is about $100,000. She got into Maryland and its Honors College today. She has lots of friends going to Maryland, but Tulane is the better fit. We’re happy that Maryland is an option, but sad about Tulane.

What’s really awful is that we bought plane tickets for the Honors Weekend already. She was so looking forward to meeting her advisor, etc. I don’t know what to do now.

@Mamatodogs - I’m sorry for you and your D. We held off getting tickets for honors weekend for that exact reason. Maybe the airlines will let you cancel and get credit instead???

My D is still applying to Tulane’s Altman program. Considering Altman is also very selective and decisions probably won’t come out until late March, she definitely won’t attend honors weekend. If she gets into Altman, that will be a hard decision, without Altman there’s no question. Like you, I think Tulane would have been a better fit but our state public schools are top notch.

Same

My older DD did not get PT or DHS, but she was invited to Altman. Even though Tulane was the most expensive of her “final 3”, being accepted into Altman made the decision to pay a bit more worth it. The program is amazing and the opportunities she has had do make the cost difference “worth it”. That said, Tulane was more generous 2 years ago with merit than they seem to be this year. Not to take anything away from my older DD (who I think is amazing) but my younger DD had higher stats and in my opinion equally as good essays but got less in merit.

For what it is worth, I do believe that going to the honors weekend and engaging with current Altman Scholars as well as the 2 professors in charge of the program is what helped to get her an interview.

@mychicas - Thank you! I’m glad to hear your D loves the program. I have no doubt it is amazing, which is why that program in particular may be worth the additional cost. (Congratulations to your D for being one of the few lucky ones to have the experience.) We would love to go to honors weekend and talk to them in person. However, it’s just not feasible financially to grasp at straws knowing they only accept 20+ kids.

I think it’s great that Tulane offers merit. They have been generous. However, we are fortunate to live in a state with some of the best state schools. My oldest is at UCLA engineering school, no merit but we pay a lot less in tuition. Tulane’s tuition will increase over the next three years at a higher rate then our in-state. As mamatodogs mentioned, the difference over 4 yrs is hard to ignore. We’ll have to see what happens when the rest of D’s decisions come out and use our money to visit her top options in April. Kind of really bummed but have faith that what is meant to be will be.

My kid was deferred from EA to RD. She had applied for the scholarships, and we weren’t sure if they’d be considered. But today her portal was updated with no Scholarship. She still hasn’t been accepted or rejected though.

This is so weird.
We are visiting on 2/21 anyway… first opportunity she’s had to go. Sigh.

@betsy2178 @Arcadia101 @xgamesmode @yellowginger1

Congratulations on your awards! Can you tell me whether you were admitted EA or ED?

EA! @3kids2dogs

Check your students early action application, that’s where my son’s update for dean was posted. He didn’t receive deans but got a Distinguished Scholars Award.
which I am hoping is something different than founders in the acceptance letter.

@3kids2dogs EA as well.

I received a notification on Friday as well! I got the DHS and I’m an EA student! So excited!

Has anyone received stamp notification?

@cupcake2002 - if a student received DHS or PTA, is it safe to assume that they are not in the running for Stamps?

My daughter did this morning. She is a semi-finalist with an interview this week and then a cut round with a possible second interview if you made the first cut. After getting the no on the Paul Tulane on Friday. Odd timing.

I was wondering if ya’ll could give me some advice - I was an EA applicant, deferred but got admitted. I got the merit scholarship of founders award based on ‘academic performance and strength of my DHS application’ in my acceptance letter - and then I got a specific scholarship update letter that said I had not received PT, but not a specific, separate rejection letter for DHS. Am I supposed to just be reading between the lines here or…? Thanks, ya’ll.

So if a student has already gotten DHS or PTA, will they not be in the running for Stamps? It was under my impression that Stamps finalists were chosen out of the DHS/PTA winners.

The same thing happened to me! I haven’t gotten a no for DHS which is weird.

Well my daughter got a NO for the Paul Tulane on Friday, with a merit bump. And then today got the Stamps email. So I am thinking the answer to your question is yes. But what do I know!

@delraymom63

People drive themselves nuts on here every year with the package tracking thing. Go look at the prior year threads to see how uncertain and unreliable that thing typically is.

Best thing is to just wait for the thick envelope old-school style. but if you can’t do that, prior year threads will basically tell you everything you want to know about timetable and various tea-reading/conspiracy theories.

Good luck to your kid.

My son received $20K per year merit but did not receive Paul Tulane award. I was surprised he was not accepted into the honors college. His GPA is 4.2 and a 34 ACT, 9 AP courses with 4s and 5s on the AP tests, great extracurriculars. What type of stats do you need to get into the Honors college?
