Accepted Early Action and so so happy. But hey everyone: Don’t be discouraged with a deferral because especially at Tulane, it is NOT a no. I was very “average” for their stats (31 ACT, 3.8 UW GPA) so I thought I would get in, but was super nervous about merit money. I ended up getting $26,000 per year. I showed a TON of demonstrated interest. Visited campus junior year, attending meeting at my school both junior and senior year, reached out to my rep and had a wonderful alumni interview, emailed my rep after saying how excited I was, came home from school one day in tears because of how nervous I was that I wouldn’t get merit money, so wrote an extremely well-worded email to my rep saying how Tulane is my top choice and if I got merit money I would commit right away. My head of school sent an email to my rep with an additional “informal” rec saying how it’s my top choice. I think my demonstrated interest (and possible harassment haha) got me accepted with the very generous merit aid with my “average” stats.
One thing I will say is that if you are no longer considering Tulane please withdraw your application. Fact of the matter is, it will take spots away from those that do want to go there if enough people are applying and know for a fact they do not want to attend. That being said, if you still are considering or want it as a safety school you’re entitled to that but if at this point you would not consider going and only want to get in on principle or got in somewhere else you would rather go, I recommend withdrawing. There is an easy way to do this on the portal in one click on the top right corner.
Hi! So I applied EA to Tulane and I got deferred and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice as to why:
SAT: 1520 (superscore), essay 19
ACT: (not reported) 33
APs: reported all my 5’s and 4’s, I think it all came out to 6 tests total when I took 8 total already
SAT subject: 760 math 2
Class Rank: 4/308
GPA: 4.0/4.88
Student athlete, 2 year JV volleyball, 2 year varsity captain
Excelled in Choir: All state, all county, extracurricular groups
Members of few clubs, as well as travel volleyball
Volunteer service trips
Internship at johns hopkins medical center research labratory
work experience: at massage envy and caretaker longterm
Why Tulane: 6.5/10 – talked about how I visited there for a service trip in high school, merit aid since i plan to pursue premed, NOLA as a city itself, atmosphere at Tulane, plans to volunteer more in community like on the service trip
Extracurricular essay: 6/10 – about service trips
Personal Statement essay: 9.5/10
5 students total from my high school applied, 1 of which got in but they are not as qualified as me. Can anyone help me understand this decision? Thanks 
@samanthaeyang Tulane is big on demonstrated interest. Did you visit campus, email your admissions counselor, attend info sessions in your area, etc?

@samanthaeyang Looking at your stats, Tulane probably knows that you applied to bigger and better options and are not really all that interested in their school, seeing as how you (correct me if I’m wrong) haven’t visited or reached out to them and more than likely simply took advantage of a free application. Tulane is huge on demonstrated interest and does not want to be seen as a prestigious safety for highly qualified individuals. More than likely, this is what led to your deferral. If you truly are interested, email the admissions office a letter and tour the school to show them you would really attend.

For anyone who still hasn’t received a decision, I called my admission counselor today and he said there will be “another batch” of notifications sometime in January, and that I was on that list… So, I don’t know or care really if that hypothetically means those of us are getting x, y, or z decision, but maybe call to see if that is the case for you too!
My kid had to find out on the portal and our mail is always slow this time of year. Accepted with merit aid, but won’t get into stats. So many with similar stats and scores have such varying results on defer or accept with different amounts of money. My conclusion is that grades and test scores are important, but that there is a holistic element that includes motivation and demonstrated interest to go to Tulane. Congratulations to all who are being admitted and good luck to everyone on making your own tough choices at the end of the day.
Is there a way for me to see what my essay scores were? I noticed that people are saying they got 10/10 or 6/10 etc on their essays. Is this just a guess or is there a way to see it on the portal?

You have great stats. Did you visit Tulane or attend meetings when they came to your school or city? It’s probably not too late to reach out to your regional Tulane rep and express how Tulane is a top choice and see if they might reconsider their decision. Best of luck!
Just checked the Gibson portal and it shows my updated merit award but no financial aid. Does this mean I didn’t qualify for any or that it hasn’t been added yet? Has anyone been awarded financial aid?

I think I fell into the trap that Tulane sets to get a lower acceptance rate, give out free aplications to get lots of people to apply, and then reject the ones that they don’t think will actually go to Tulane.
I mean, Tulane isn’t anywhere near the top of my list so I guess they’re right but I read on the blog that it can help your case to show interest in the university by writing a letter or something.
I was kind of disappointed to be deferred, but I guess it makes sense that they can tell that I will probably end up somewhere else.

Hey guy, to who didn’t receive a update like me. I just called Tulane, as an international student I need a TOEFL score as English proficiency requirements. Since I got food grade on sat so I got the wavier of the test by the beginning of October, however, the system goes wrong and indicates my application is incomplete until the beginning of this month (ironically my portal said everything is in by the early October). It’s great I didn’t get rejected, but another month of anxious waiting is driving me crazy.
4.58/5.0 GPA 1470 SATs. 9 Varsity letters lots of sports and sports leadership stuff including 3 Captainships very competitive Northeast large public high school. Deferred.
Yesterday I checked my portal and they deferred me even though I met the criteria for guaranteed admittance for Louisiana residents. Called them and today, they updated my portal and I got in with a $22,000 scholarship!
