NEW ORLEANS – Police on Friday arrested a Tulane football player in the Bourbon Street stabbing that left five people hurt last weekend.

Tulane confirmed that Ray Boudreaux had been arrested and said the senior also had been suspended from school and the team. His name did not appear on the team roster online Friday afternoon.

Police accuse Boudreaux of stabbing five people in a fight between two groups at a French Quarter bar that ended on the streets Sept. 16; a surveillance camera caught the stabbing, police said.

Boudreaux was arrested early Friday at his home in Metairie on five counts of attempted murder, according to police, who also say the knife used in the stabbings was found in his house.

Police Sgt. Joe Narcisse said a tipster recognized Boudreaux on the video.

Boudreaux is a 5-foot-10-inch running back who last year started two of the eight games he played and had 175 yards, according to Tulane’s 2007 media guide.

D works for media relations for the team and told us about it yesterday (she said it was all over ESPN) - unbelievable. Obviously not what the school or NOLA needs in terms of press.

Story is probably going to wind up being more complicated than first appearances. In addition the NOLA DA is about as incompetent as they come. He just lost a jury tral where the accused had confessed to a triple homicide. No doubt this is bad for all involved, but we ought to wait for all the facts to come out before lynching this kid.

My informants tell me the football player had a pretty solid reputation before this incident, but its probably not a great an idea to hang at a club that needs metal detectors at the door or to take a knife there.

Last Spring we had a football player murdered but the school never reported it on the official web site. I guess they figured the last thing they needed was anything that would trigger parental fears i the middle of commitment season. It wasn’t on campus or even in NOLA, but rather out in the burbs. It was some sort of love triangle, jealous boyfriend shoots rival thing.

Neither of these incidents say anything about campus safety, and neither happened anywhere near campus.

I didn’t want to make any posts before talking with Ray, but I haven’t been able to, so I can’t really add his point of view. His sister is saying how ridiculous this all is and how it was in self-defense, BUT. . .

One of the people he stabbed died (either earlier today or yesterday, no one I’ve talked to knew; today was the first the team heard about it). He’s now facing four counts of attempted murder and one count of murder and it’s not looking too promising for him being released.

higherlead - when you say “last spring we had a football player murdered”, he had already graduated from the school, so there really wasn’t any obligation for Tulane to post that on the website. We weren’t teammates because I joined the team after he had gone, but he was honestly one of the nicest people I had ever met. Ray is sort of the same way, I don’t know what he was thinking or why he would ruin his life the way he has.

Ecliptica, it’s clear that you’ve been personally hurt by what’s happened this time and the last, so i want to say I’m sorry. It’s not much, but it’s all I can do in such an impersonal venue. How horrible for everyone affected.
