Well…from another thread. Tupperware sounds like it’s going out of business. I’m sure all of us have a few good Tupperware stories. I’ll start:
When I was a poor grad student, I actually sold Tupperware. It was 1976 and I still have some of the limited edition red/white/blue containers. It was a job I actually hated, but the hours were somewhat flexible…and the money was OK. And I got a LOT of free Tupperware.
My manager took me to the state Tupperware convention in Illinois. That was some hilarious event. These women stood up and sang “I’ve got that Tupperware feeling down in my heart” complete with hand motions. I wanted to crawl under my seat. Hold that thought…because it relates to my next thing.
There was a one person show…Dixies Tupperware Party…and it was beyond hilarious. It was held in smaller venues and Dixie (a trans Tupperware sale person) actually ran a Tupperware party…complete with games and prizes. The brochure said this was a real Tupperware Party…so, I brought a broken lid that needed to be replaced (remember….they were guaranteed for life?). After the show, Dixie had a little sales thing in the lobby. I took my lid, and they very nicely took all my information and sent me a new lid.
But here is the funny part. On the way, I was telling my two friends about my experience as a salesperson, and the convention, and the singing of that ridiculous song. They told me later they didn’t believe me when I told them about the song. Imagine their surprise when Dixie belted that song (complete with hand motions) from the stage. Beyond hilarious.
Like many of you, I still have Tupperware. I guess I need to toss the broken lids (and their containers) because they can’t be replaced anymore.
I don’t have any real good stories, except I have a few pieces of real Tupperware that I bought from the school fund raisers - when the kids were in pre-school! They get constant use and 20+ years later they still are in great shape.
Our other stuff is Rubbermaid and those have been great as well. We still have some from when I met H in the early 90s.
I don’t think I have any actual Tupperware anymore. I remember my mom going to parties and I’m sure I did too in the 80’s. The one unique think I had that was fun was the popsicle holder. I remember the three little hole dots on the stick:
This ^^^ is a stock photo but would be fun if people posted their ACTUAL Tupperware they still own. Can’t wait for the first bright orange or avocado green!
I found a couple of my mom’s Tupperware jello molds in my cupboard just now. Plain white. I haven’t used them for years, but probably keep them in memory of her making so many jello “salads.”
We had a lot of Tupperware growing up because a close family member worked for Rexall/Dart, the parent company.
We had those too! I bet my mom still has Tupperware from that time period. I’m currently over 4000 miles from mine, but they aren’t anything special. Just clear on the bottom with pinkish red lids.
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a Tupperware party, but if so, it sure wasn’t with Dixie! I was curious but it seems like she turned it into an off Broadway show!
You can really go down a rabbit hole searching Tupperware songs - here’s one with Anita Bryant!
Yes…it was an off Broadway…as well as a touring show. And for anyone who has ever been to a Tupperware party, it’s a MUST SEE! You will just need to trust me on this one!
Yes, as I posted in the other thread yesterday, Tupperware has declared bankruptcy. Here’s the link, as it has a gift link to the WaPo article about it.
Gotta say-- whether you buy a cake carrier from the dollar store, Target, or Sur La Table (from cheap to expensive), none of them work as well as a cake carrier from the 1970’s Tupperware! One of the few things my siblings and I fought over when we dismantled our parents house!
I have a few things (that strainer- the first thing I bought for my post-college grad apartment, I use it constantly) that have stood the test of time!
We have Tupperware casserole dishes that are microwave and oven-safe. We store a lot of leftovers in it—it’s great for reheating in the mircowave. The loaf pan in particular is ideal for storing a deboned Costco chicken! Yup, the carrerole dishes are from my wedding shower in the 80s and still in use, even tho the company in France that made them for Tupperware closed their factory long ago.
I have lots of Tupperware and have a few favorites including the container for marinating meat where you can flip it as desired to get thorough distribution of the marinade. SIL grills a fair amount and had me give him one for Christmas one year after he saw mine. D just sent me a link 2 months ago for a piece she wanted that is a tray with a well in the middle for dip and sections for veggies or fruits around the circular tray. It was on sale and it’s in my closet waiting to be wrapped for her for Christmas. Their products are expensive (almost ridiculously so), but most hold up so much better than the competition, IMO.
As a kid I hated oranges - because they had to be peeled and the peels always burned my fingers (nail biter). When I was 16 a Tupperware rep heard my story and said I needed one of their citrus peelers. I bought it for $5 which was crazy money then. It was a game changer - and I found I loved oranges!
Fast forward 15 years, I was living in Hawaii and somehow lost my beloved peeler. After about a year I was at an outdoor flea market and there was a Tupperware table. I told my story and mentioned I missed the peeler. The rep reached into her lunchbox and pulled one out and gave it to me. Just gave it to me. I tried to say no, but she was adamant. I still have it, and use it often.
I’ll be sad if they go away. They changed many lives.
I have the citrus peeler, and I love it. But I had a bad accident with it once - I actually cut deep into my hand with it. I’m very careful now!
My favorite Tupperware container was a giant covered bowl. I took my Asian Salad to many parties and potlucks in that bowl. Unfortunately, I lost it somewhere along the line & now will never be able to replace it. Not that I would have replaced it … but it’s weird to know that I can’t even if I want to.
I have one of those citrus peelers also. I used them for party prizes when I sold Tupperware.
I also have both a cake taker (mine also has a rack that can be put inside it so you can take two pies, or two layers of cupcakes), and also a pie carrier that I use a LOT.
Anyone else have the shaker you can make instant pudding in? I’ll take a picture later. I actually have a couple of those because they are also good for mixing the flour and milk when making a white sauce or gravy. Has a little spin thing that sits inside the lid.
We used to have the salt and pepper shakers which were perfect for beach picnics. The salt never got all stuck together. Those have disappeared!
I’ve totally gotten rid of the jello mold makers (they don’t even sell at my thrift shop). And no more plates or bowls/lids that match. We had a whole set of pink/blue/aqua/grey when our kids were little. They are gone.
