Turkey-Ataturk University

I’m currently looking at studying abroad in Erzurum, Turkey, at Ataturk University.

In order to graduate with my bachelors degree I need to complete an internship, as such this program offers me the opportunity to intern and do a language immersion program.

The description of the program is as follows:
This is a two-part program involving language immersion and internship opportunities for undergraduate students in sustainability areas (agriculture, food, science, hospitality), social development and humanities. Participants can enroll in the language immersion component alone or in both the language immersion and internship components. Students earn 3 credits in Turkish language during the language study portion of the program and live on the university campus. During the internship segment of the program, students also live in institutional housing/apartments. Students participating in the two-part program can earn 12 to 15 credits.

I’m excited at the idea that I might be able to complete my dream of studying abroad, learning a new language, and completing my internship in one time frame, but I know nearly nothing about Turkey, it’s culture and customs, and am very intimidated.

Has anyone here ever studied abroad in Turkey, if not, has anyone visited Erzurum, Turkey? What are the people like? What should I expect?

Thank you in advance.

Dd is doing a post-under-grad year in Istanbul… is at Bogazici U. Istanbul is very cosmopolitan and public transport is great. Quite a few people speak english. Not sure about Erzurum!

i would recommend you BOGAZICI UNIVERSTIY, MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, BILKENT UNIVERSITY, ISTANBUL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY.

but atatürk is also ok.

Climate

winter/ erzurum = michigan

summer/ erzurum = california

air is clean.

Culture

conservative people but friendly.(students are not conservative at all)

Education quality

good

Campus

big but not many facilities

If you have any chance to study in ISTANBUL, you should go to ISTANBUL, it is very similar to NEW YORK.

Anyone have any thoughts on Bilgi University in Istanbul? I guess it’s at the top of the list as far as Istanbul Universities go (from what I’ve read, at least). The school I’m applying for has a study abroad program there. I’ve just always wanted to go to Istanbul for some reason. Also, my Turkish friend made it sound like the best city in the world. :D
