Hello all. I’d like to ask for some advice for my son. He has done mostly plays and modeling and sings/plays guitars at open mic nights. Anyway, to cut to the chase, he has been invited to audition for the role of Puck’s younger brother on Glee. We can’t get him to California by tomorrow for the audition, so we will have to record and email it in.

He is comfortable slating for modeling jobs, but we have no idea how to set up the audition video. It’s supposed to be 16 bars of a song with him playing guitar then another song without the guitar. How should he introduce himself? Should he say anything about himself? How should he dress for it?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. We aim to get the video in as soon as possible.

Hi Momom2, My son just went through the GLEE audition so I can give you my very limited advise. Slate with name and title of song only and then just drop into character. Give them something distinctive. Does he sing classical at all? Oddly, it was requested at my son’s audition. Make sure his 16-bars are clean, pure and true, not belt. Have fun with the guitar solo. Just our experience.

DS is not by any means Puck’s long lost little brother, lol! Quite the opposite. So, no expectations of a call back for it. Good luck to your son. And remember: have fun with it.

He has not done classical. I suppose if he should get a call back, we might should have something in the hopper. What would be considered classical?

Thanks for writing. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for your DS, too. I’ve heard of kids getting recast as another character based on their auditions.

In my very limited experience, slate should be something along the lines of “Hi, my name is …, I am auditioning for the role of …, and I will be singing xxxxx and yyyyy.” Then sing the first song, then sing the second song. If you are decent at editing, you can do the slate, then stop, then do the first song, then stop, then the second. That way you can do a few takes of each segment, then put the pieces together at the end, so if you have a better take on one song you can go with that.

Sometimes in the slate people state the name of their agency too.

For dress I would go with something that puts you in mind of the character you are auditioning for, but don’t go crazy trying to re-create yourself. You obviously don’t want to dress preppy to audition for Puck’s little brother.
