TV Size for Dorm Room

What is the maximum size LCD TV that I should consider for my dorm room?

40".

the viewing distance on 40" tvs is about 8 feet, which would allow you to see it from your bed if its on the opposite wall. the problem being, if you get any closer the picture will seem pixelated. i wouldn’t go past 32" myself. and then it depends on what resolution the tv is. the higher it is, the closer you can be without it appearing pixelated.

There’s a difference between maximum possible, and maximum that should actually be considered. I couldn’t imagine bringing a 40", or even a 32" TV to a dorm room.

What is the setup of your dorm room? 32’’ is perfect. It’s big enough that you should have the big TV in the hall (if you want TV parties where all your friends come over to watch Lost or the Super Bowl) but small enough to fit in the room. If you have an apartment style room with a common room 40’’ might be better because you have extra space.

You could get a tuner that connects to the cable box and watch it on your monitor. That then gives you the ability to record and time shift.

^and it’s cheaper

And it means you can watch tv when you have extra time instead of when you need to be working. My daughter has an EyeTV attached to her computer and to a cable box. There are many such options.

If my room is 12’ X 11’ that fits 2 people… do you think it’s still wise to bring a 32 inch TV. I can’t imagine fitting that in my room with 2 people.

depends on the layout, but its certainly doable.

I agreed with my roommate that I’ll bring the 42" and he’ll bring all the cooking appliances

^ So I’m assuming you’re in an apartment?

For a dorm room, DON’T go for a 40 inch!!! Go way, way smaller.

I already have a 37" tv, is that going to be too big?

It’s a dorm.

That’s a massive TV for a dorm room. And what all cooking appliances is he bringing? A microwave?

Everything we need haha, mini fridge, microwave, and toaster oven for now.

Buy yourself a TV tuner that you can use with a laptop then you can just watch TV on your laptop through Windows Media Center haha.

Go for the 60" plasma :)

I brought my 40" tv to campus last semester. In addition I also had my 19" lcd monitor as well. Both fit just fine. I had the 40" in the corner of my room and had a great view. Now keep in mind I had a single, so it’s a bit smaller than doubles, triples or suites. However with that in mind, it also means the room is going to be bigger for your stuff, but you have keep thinking about your roommates too. I seriously doubt that guys would oppose to a 40". Be careful if your roommates are a rowdy bunch. Don’t want a broken 40" by the end of the semester.

The real question here should be how big the walls are in your dorm? If you can put up a tv and still have visible wall space, you could/should always go bigger. With that said, I think your best bet would be a projector and screen. Just sayin…
