I think it will be interesting to see if the prosecutor can establish that the two bullies should have foreseen that the 12 year old might actually commit suicide.

I am thrilled to see the authorities stepping in and taking this seriously. If only they had done so before this beautiful child killed herself.

They can also get them on stalking and physical assault charges which there seems to be plenty of evidence of judging by the reports.

Agree with the sheriff that the parents of the bullies were wrong to not immediately parent appropriately by cutting off all access to electronic devices upon first notification.

Back when I was a kid, parents would do things like lock up the TV/video gaming consoles and remove all electronics…including boomboxes/stereo systems from the kids’ rooms and lock them up in an inaccessible closet as punishment for much less than what these two bullies are accused of.

And then there were kids like myself and some families who never allowed such electronics to be in the kids’ rooms in the first place until late high school or until they’re off to college.

razorsharp, the two girls have been charged with felony aggravated stalking. I question whether authorities would need to prove the suicide was directly caused by the two girls, only that they were guilty of the charge levied against them.

Found this interesting excerpt from another source, who has identified the two girls (though I have removed the girl’s name):

She sounds like an extremely vicious young lady.

You make a good point nrdsb4 but if the death is not part of the state’s case against the alleged bullies, then the death would not be relevant and any evidence of it would have to be excluded. But then again, i am no expert on Florida law.

^^^^It sounds like the 14 y/o was worse. Apparently the 12 y/o girl has expressed remorse and apologized to Sedgwick’s mother, while the 14 y/o posted the “IDGAF” post.

I saw a screen shot of the Facebook page. The status change was horrible enough, but at the time the page was captured, 31 people had “liked” it. Sick!

I did see a couple of people made posts condemning the statement. One friend told her he had lost respect for her. Another told her she needed help.

Other reports I’ve read said the 14 year old was the ringleader and considering it’s in her interest to deny making that FB post, I’m going to take her “I’ve been hacked” with a cargoship full of salt.

“Hey you lawyers out there…is there any mens rea here that would support charging these brats with legal culpability for the death itself?”

Maybe, but I personally wouldn’t support it. You can have all the mens rea in the world, and that doesn’t prove causation. I can almost never get past reasonable doubt when it comes to the reason someone committed suicide at a given moment.

It’s really a shame you can’t charge the adult parents with a crime for mis-parenting. No kid gets like this, to this extent, without some neglectful (at best) disgustingly terrible (more likely) parenting along the way (my point bolstered, I believe, by the neighbors’ description of the siblings as well). We’ve all seen these parents, I’m pretty sure. Sigh. Why even have kids if you aren’t going to parent them? Makes me ill.

Really, what is wrong with these teenagers? So filled with hate. What has changed in our society that 14 year olds are so focused on victimizing their peers? They must loathe themselves to treat others in this manner. I really struggle to understand this - it seems like these tragedies are becoming an everyday occurrence…

I’m sure bullying like this always occurred. It’s just that now, people from all over can hear about it due to social media, technology, etc. Though it might be harder to escape from online bullying than physical bullying, since the bully doesn’t have to be near the victim.

The 14 year old sounds almost psychopathic – how can she have no remorse at all? And it says her siblings also behaved this way, so maybe it’s a parenting issue.

I couldn’t even finish the article. The tactics this girl employed to isolate Rebecca are sickening to me. My own feeling is that she was motivated by the fact that her boyfriend used to date Rebecca. Had to make sure he was never going to look back. Stomach turning.

I mean, they didn’t have these kinds of technologies in the past, but I can immediately bring to mind some kids from my past who would have made good (read: evil) use of them if they had had the means.

Actually, probably not much has changed. Having been bullied mercilessly 40 years ago, I can say that the main thing that’s changed is the ability to bring the bullying to the public via social media. The level of cruelty remains the same.

As for one for one of the girls showing remorse, I’ll take that with a grain of zip. Abusers ALWAYS show remorse between abuse events. What a load of carp.
