Two good samaritans killed while protecting women from anti Muslim rant

This story is so sad. There seems to be an increase in frequency of these anti immigrant/ anti minority rants. Perhaps it’s because video is more prevalent but nonetheless it’s unnerving.

There was a stellar young man stabbed to death last week in Maryland. It was a week before he was due to graduate from college.

The current climate seems to have emboldened racists. Or maybe as you suggested, we are just hearing more about it due to the proliferation of cell phones.

This man received a bucket of hate simply because he was talking to his mother in Spanish at an airport.

It seems as if not only is it somehow “acceptable” to spew hateful rhetoric, but we’re also seeing more physical aggression. Really, if you are yelling angry invectives, it’s not that much further to start swinging fists :frowning:

Sickening.

And it’s not just hateful rhetoric, but irresponsible “joking” by people in positions of authority. We need to hold elected officials, teachers and the like to higher standards.

The difference between the Dartmouth protests and this is painfully thin.

Extremists on one side would prevent you from doing a thing, extremists on the other would dictate with whom. The what and the who wobble back and forth depending on whether it’s left or right. Otherwise you just can’t tell the difference.

I can tell the difference between situations in which people are stabbed to death and situations in which they aren’t.

Agreed, but when speaking events are cancelled because of the threats of this level of violence, the line isn’t nearly as clear.
Extremism is wrong. Just wrong, and I’m equally concerned about violent incivility from both extremes.

@50N40W Are you talking about Middlebury?

^ probably Berkeley. Midd wasn’t canceled.

Berk was, but that may have been part of the plan.

Taliesin Meche, a 2016 graduate of Reed College, was one of the two Portland heroes. Look for the helpers.

I just saw the graduation photo of Taliesin Meche. This is making me cry.

The other American hero killed by the white nationalist was Ricky Best, father of four.

Rest in peace, brave heroes. We’ll continue the fight against white nationalism and hate.

Our Country doesn’t care for people with mental illness or physical illness. We are so behind in Health care for all of our citizens and this is why we see deaths and murder that could be prevented. If the pro action of healthcare for all citizens is called liberal by the far off indoctrinated Repulicans then we are in a sad place in US current history.

Appalling.

White terrorists “have mental illness.” Brown terrorists are terrorists.

The loss of those two very different but very fine men is a tragedy.

<<<< White terrorists “have mental illness.” Brown terrorists are terrorists.<<<

I understand your point, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn in the next few days that the killer is mentally ill.

Well, we did learn the killer was a Bernie Sander/Jill Stein supporter.
