Nope, dorm beds do not come with guard rails. I’m not entirely sure if you can use the extra board of wood as a guard rail, but it would make getting out very hard if you lived in a bunk.

It really depends on your RA. My RA didn’t give a rat’s arse about using routers. I usually brought mine out to the lounge so my friends and I could all get internet while studying and whatnot. If you’re planning to leave it in your room, nobody is going to try and hunt down the person broadcasting signal =P

I haven’t heard of anyone getting caught for setting up a wireless router, but at the same time, almost no one does it because it’s really not necessary. There are ethernet ports in the dorm rooms, in the lounges, and in the other common areas. Outside of that, there’s wireless pretty much everywhere you need it. I would say that getting a wireless router is not really worth it.

My dorm bed came with guard rails, and so did everybody I know in my suite in Cuarto.

It’s not allowed, but they won’t track you down. You will, however, get in trouble for file sharing, primarily if you are uploading.

fooshy

Make that ONLY if you are uploading. I downloaded a lot, didn’t upload, and never was approached about anything. From what I’ve heard and experienced, they are only interested in tracking people who are uploading, not downloading. If you’re using a program like LimeWire, it is possible to change the settings to prevent anyone from uploading from your computer… search online and you will find it.

On some wireless routers you can go into the advanced options and change the settings so that it does not broadcast the wireless network name. That way it would be totally invisible to those who didn’t know about it.

Do the dorms have guard rails for the beds(W//w/o raised beds)? If not, where can you find them?
Yes they do. (I used one so that I wouldn’t roll over and destroy my laptop. It came in handy ;))

They say not to use a wireless router, but have any of you tried it(are there penalties?)
Yes, I have. We configured a Thille D one but (hopefully you’re tech savy since you asked) we couldn’t get a functioning IP address or DNS for all the wireless laptops so basically it was broadcasting but wouldn’t allow anyone to actually surf the internet. However, Thille C got theirs working.

If you use a router, you have to register the MAC address of the router, not of the computers, because the network treats the router as a device.

fooshy

fooshy,

yeah we registered all the PCs and then the mac address of the router but for some reason it wouldn’t allow anyone to connect to the internet. it was odd. shrugs
