Two Transfer Questions -- Help!

“Math course evaluations expire at the date listed on the online transfer credit database, students may take and complete approved courses up to the expiration date (i.e., a course that expires 8/25/12 would be valid for 2012 summer semesters, but not the 2012 fall semester).”

This is listed on the page for math courses on the LSA website. The math courses I will be taking at the University of Arkansas, Calc 1, 2, 3 and diff EQ, However, Calculus 1 “expired” in 2013, Calculus II in 2014, etc. What does this mean? Does this mean I will get no transfer credit for these classes? Will they even count as prerequisites?

Secondly, in the catalog number for many classes, there is simply “DEPT” and no number. Does this imply the equivalency varies by department? Thanks!

I think that expiration means that you can’t expect them to automatically give you credit for Calculus I, etc., since they haven’t looked into these courses for a while and thus aren’t sure if they still are equivalent to Michigan’s classes. The college will look into the classes and reaffirm or reject the transfer equivalences they previously had in place. Mathematics courses are usually the easiest classes to transfer, though, since there’s very little difference in content among colleges.

DEPT means that you won’t get credit for a specific class at Michigan by transferring those courses in. I had that problem with some language and computer science classes. The college awarded me four credits for each of those courses by assigning them to generic French and EECS names on my transcript (i.e. French 201X, EECS 101X) but did not give me credit for their Michigan equivalent courses (i.e. French 232, EECS 183). I could go through a petitioning process to show that my classes should be considered equal to Michigan’s, but there are no guarantees that the university will agree.

The “DEPT” thing poses a question, then. Composition I and II at my current school, the University of Arkansas, both have the DEPT label. Composition I is a required prerequisite for transferring to the college of engineering. Would I still be counted as having the prerequisite?

I don’t know much about the CoE requirements specifically, but you’d probably want to petition the college to show that your Composition courses are equivalent. To do that, you’ll need at least the syllabi, the descriptions in the University of Arkansas course catalog, descriptions of assignments, and several examples of graded assignments.

Wow, that’s a real pain. So it could mean that all my efforts to transfer were for nothing, even if I make perfect grades, if they don’t accept the petition? Comp II is a prerequisite I need. Do they normally accept such petitions, from generally good 4 year schools? (No other school in Arkansas says anything other than “DEPT” for their Comp II courses on the Umich site, for the record.)

Great, now I’m nervous and I still have another year and a summer before my prereqs are complete :/

I suppose I’ll ask, is there a distinction between getting credit for a class and it counting as your prerequisite? For instance, if the above scenario happened and I have no other options?
