Two Virginia Tech Engineering students charged in murder of 13 year old girl

Keepers defense people are already using her mental health issues in this. Not in this link but somewhere else I saw that she told the FBI that she was “excited to be part of something secret and special.” Both suspects seem to be talking. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/02/04/us/ap-us-slain-virginia-teen-suspects.html?_r=0

Sigh… Once again, there’s no link between violence comission and mental illness. Also, that would be a massive civil rights violations on so many levels.

Really? Both of mine did. Not a mental health screening, but a physical with the doctor involving 2-3 pages of forms plus immunization records.

I thought that was required of any college.

Very false

Really awful–poor child!

Just sick.

Did the female VT student help plan the murder?

@Longhaul

You are of course welcome to your opinion, but personally it seems like one of the most ill-conceived opinions I have seen in quite a while. Since no school I know of requires a psych exam, it can hardly be laid at the feet of VT. And not only is a psych exam as impractical a suggestion as there could possibly be, I think that keeping someone out of college for anything that might be found is probably illegal on several counts. ADA, for one. You know, just like the rulings that says schools have to allow “comfort animals” in dorms for students diagnosed with certain anxiety disorders. I am sure there are several statutes that don’t allow colleges to discriminate based on psych issues. The only reason for the physicals and medical records is to insure proper immunizations so that there are not life-threatening epidemics on campuses for things like measles. Not being immune is not a disability, it is a lack of standard medications that is easily remedied.

Eisenhaur was arrested so quickly because the little 8yr old neighbor girls came forward with the information about the “Boyfriend” and the police were able to get right on the text/Kik angle. Keepers had Nicole’s “Minion” blanket hidden in a suitcase in her dorm room and she was the one who gave the police the location of the body, which was buried just a couple of miles from some property owned by Eisenhaur’s family, ABC News had an interview with an FBI profiler who theorized that Eisenhaur is a true psychopath who, by virtue of his “Surface Perfection” has been able to bend and manipulate weaker people to his will and that they are now looking for other young girls whom he may have been trying to coerce. I suspect that we will learn a lot more- none of it good- as this case proceeds.

No. As someone who has had Major Depressive Disorder since my early teens, no I absolutely do not think there should be mental health exams. And I’d bet my last dollar that psychos like this can fool the tests.

I’ve never, ever heard of a physical for a university. (I’d also fail that one.)

ETA: I see @Ohmomof2 's kids did. What the heck kind of physical would a UNIVERSITY require? Are people denied admission if they’re physically disabled in some way? That seems like a huge violation of rights.

Both my kids had chronic health issues. Just curious if that should have banned them from college? Both are happy college grads and S is working 2 jobs – one in EE and doing great, even with his health issues while D continues to suffer, tho she did graduate after 6 years of hard work.

@romanigypsyeyes

As I stated in my post, they require medical records that prove various immunizations have been given and are up to date. I believe this is the law and is obviously designed to prevent deadly outbreaks of diseases that otherwise are well under control. But with that many young people in such close quarters as dorm life and classroom life is, it is a Petri dish of germs already. It is a logical and widely accepted precaution. It is absolutely NOT an attempt to weed out people with disabilities. That is a wild and baseless thing to even suggest.

Yes, I believe many Us currently do require some immunization a, but can’t how that applies to this horrific murder of this young child by these heartless teens.

Immunizations are different from physical examinations.

That seems WAY more invasive than simply requiring various immunizations.

I am a public health person. I am a HUGE promoter of vaccines and I know damn well why they’re required and I think anyone who voluntarily doesn’t get immunized shouldn’t be allowed in public schools. I’m more acutely aware of this than the average person thanks to the fact that both my mother and I are immunocompromised. Thank you for the lecture about outbreaks though 8-|

I don’t think the lecture part was aimed at you, @romanigypsyeyes, but at the poster who wanted the medical information sent to colleges to include some sort of mental status assessment. I think @fallenchemist was just explaining the value of the info they do select as compared to that which was proposed.

The last call from Nicole’s phone was to Eisenhower’s phone number.

It’s much worse than I feared.

Requiring vaccine records is not at all the same thing as requiring a physical. I’ve never heard of a school requiring a physical.

http://yalehealth.yale.edu/new-undergraduate-student-forms

You can see the physical forms on this link that are required for Yale. I wonder if it is because all students get very basic health coverage even if they waive the student health insurance.

I usually try to avoid these stories (lots of reasons) but i haven’t been able to pull away from this one…to bring it back to CC topics, I think it’ll have even more of an impact on colleges deciding whether to admit kids with emotional issues…

The Washington Post has an extensive article this morning: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/va-tech-student-charged-in-blacksburg-teens-killing-to-appear-in-court/2016/02/04/7f37673c-cb4d-11e5-88ff-e2d1b4289c2f_story.html

Keepers also testified during the hearing that she, like Nicole, faced problems in school. She told the judge she started cutting herself and contemplated suicide.

“In eighth grade, I was dealing with a lot of bullying issues so I started cutting myself,” Keepers said

That’s when she went to the Christian Counseling Center in Maryland and learned better coping techniques, like singing and drawing, Keepers said.

But even after middle school, she continued to cut herself. At Virginia Tech, where she started in the fall, she was in counseling and took medication for depression and anxiety.

I read that article, southern hope. Lots of kids struggle with anxiety and depression, but it sounds as if she has other issues.
