Two women winning Nobel prize, physics and chemistry

I am beyond thrilled. I know one of these women quite well, and am just thrilled So deserving and such a lovely person

Yes, I read this! Terrific news, and both well deserving.

Yes, great news!

Dr. Frances Arnold is about to speak on the Caltech livestream here: http://www.ustream.tv/caltech

She is the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry at Caltech, so a Nobel pedigree there.

Just about time. Well deserved!

Frances Arnold
BS, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Princeton University, 1979
Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, U.C. Berkeley, 1985

Frances Arnold, PhD, is one of the nicest, most down to earth people I’ve ever known.

I will do more research on donna. Strickland One of the best professors I’ve ever had was Bonnie Strickland, in clinical, psychology. I doubt there is any relationship, but I am now curious.

Well, Donna Strickland is still an associate professor at 59, her university tenure and promotions committee will have some explaining to do.

Professor ranks in Canada:

^Yes, no different to US. The unofficial descriptor of “terminal associate professor” is usually an indicator of poor research performance. Anyway, now she can demand immediate promotion and double salary, or move to Harvard.

Actually, they won’t. “Full” professor status has to be applied for by the academic. The onus is on the faculty member, not the tenure and promotions committee. Donna has never begun that process. It is, however, likely that she is already tenured.

Of course she is tenured, that normally comes with Associate Professor appointment. It is highly unusual not to apply, not least for the extra salary, unless she knew in advance she would be turned down. Individual University of Waterloo salaries are published online.

It may be highly unusual but it isn’t a unique situation. I have two siblings who are academics at Canadian universities and also several friends. One of these has known Donna for years and she has been widely respected in her field for a very long time. I doubt very much that it was a question of her knowing she’d be turned down. I’m not sure why you would automatically assume that.

I don’t believe I automatically assumed anything…

My physics PhD student D is very pleased.

And this Cal grad is very pleased that another Berkeley student/professor was so honored. Go Bears.

From an interview with a Toronto reporter:

Ahh, Donna. A lazy person and a Nobel in Physics.

She sounds like a lovely, humble and brilliant person. Perhaps she can be persuaded to complete the paperwork to be a full professor.

Just a reminder, frances Arnold has a spot on Big Bang Theory tonight. Plays a Nobel, prize winner
