Im goin into computer science engineering, what kind/brand of laptop would be recommended?

You should get a Mac if anything; because you don’t have to worry about viruses from what my dad tells me AND you can install windows 8 on it if there is any reason a specific program doesnt work on your Mac

Take a look at the College Computer section of the Computer Life forum. You will find tons of recommendations.

Macs get viruses. If you’re just going to bootcamp it to windows anyways get a windows computer. If you’re working in Comp Sci you’ll be using windows for most of your work anyways.

Macs are not virus-free; and I say that as a Mac user. They do have better security and there are fewer Mac viruses, but it’s not that you don’t have to worry about them at all. And of course, if you boot Windows, you are vulnerable to any Windows virus as well.

I love my Mac and wouldn’t go back to a PC, but I agree that if you are just going to boot Windows all the time it makes more sense to get a PC. Great PCs are Toshibas, Lenovos, Asus, and Acer. Samsung is pretty good too from what I hear. I had a Toshiba before I went Mac.

I like macs better than windows machines. (currently own and use both) I just hate it when people assume macs can be compromised. I’d put money on it that a mac could be more easily compromised than a windows machine.

Asus!!! Asus!!! Asus!!!

Mac for sure

Get a Mac, it’s based on Unix and all the command line utilities come preinstalled. (So do Python and Perl.) Many of my CS assignments assumed I was working in a Unix shell, and if I didn’t have a Mac I would have had to use school computers or tweak my Windows install. Of course you could just get a PC and install Linux, but that’s more trouble than getting a Mac IMO.

I’ve had my MacBook for 4 years and have yet to experience a problem with it. I have had to get a new charger though.

At the very least get a laptop with amd a8 or intel core i3…I would probably aim around amd 10 or intel core i5. Screen size doesn’t matter. RAM at least 4 GB.
