Hello Harvardians,

I’ve been pondering this question for months now and I want to know what type of music intelligent people listen to. I posted this on the harvard forum for obvious reasons. Please only say what kind of music you listen to Mostly if you are in Harvard. I am in IB and in the top 5 % of my class and i’m also the only one in the top 5 who listens to death metal. So lets see the correlation.

Um… Different people have different tastes in music.

I listen to rock, electronica, classical, acoustic, and others. At MIT’s campus preview weekend there were parties where they played hip-hop and rap. I highly doubt there is a strong correlation between peoples’ personal preference in music and their intelligence.

I graduated a million years ago (well really about 30). I listen to some of what my younger son listens to (Finnish metal?) The Rasmuth and Apocolyptica. But really I like almost everything except hip hop, rap, caberet/American songbook type music (think Frank Sinatra) and most opera. (I make an exception for Mozart and Carmen.) I even like a lot of country music and I really like bluegrass. I spent most of this afternoon listening to Johnny Cash, after spending most of yesterday listening to Radiohead.

Music is just music. I don’t believe there is any correlation between different types or styles.

death metal is objectively stupid, though

There are no genres of music that are objectively bad. However, there is music that smart people listen to. An ear for classical, jazz, soul, or a great pop hook is evidence of sophistication, culture, and general intelligence. You can call me pretentious as you’d like, but there’s a canon of music, just like there is literature or film, that is objectively “great.” This doesn’t have basis in fact per se, but as an avid listener to all kinds of great records, it’s difficult for me to dub a girl who drives around singing along to Matchbox Twenty or some bs “intelligent.”

A sampling of ten objectively great records:
- Charles Mingus | The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
- Curtis Mayfield | Curtis
- John Coltrane | A Love Supreme
- The Velvet Underground & Nico
- The Stooges | Fun House
- Bob Dylan | Highway 61 Revisited
- Leonard Cohen | Songs of Leonard Cohen
- Sly & The Family Stone | There’s A Riot Goin’ On
- Arvo Part | Tabula Rasa
- Les Rallizes Denudes | '77 Live

I think it’s worth noting that the vast majority of people that I discuss music with on online communities and such are extremely well-educated.

I’m sure this comes off as insanely pretentious, but I promise that there’s a shard or two of truth in it somewhere.

I like screamo, metal, and opera. Together, even.

I listen to classical music, haha. Not sure if I’m going to Harvard, but seems like there’s a lot of diversity in that matter.

I listen to whatever sounds good and/or funny (N 2 gether now > any song ever made).
