typical "chance me" post!

Alright. I know these get really annoying and old (especially because most Ivy admissions are arbitrary). I’m sorry. But I am quite curious to see what others think about my chances of getting into Princeton [Class of 2013]. Also- If anyone can chance me out also for Harvard and Yale, that would be MUCH appreciated.

Chances are hard to predict, but your SAT and GPA are in range, and your EC’s are decent. I suggest that you rework you schedule so that you can take BC Calculus senior year. First, most successful applicants have taken AP Calculus. Second, every single math major I know came to Princeton with credit for BC. Many had also taken multivariable calc and differential equations.

Founding the Young Republicans club will not hurt you. The issue has been addressed numerous times on this board and others, so use the search feature if you want to find out more.

So no Calc BC hurts me badly?

You should at least take AB simply because nearly all competitive applicants will have had calculus. But if you want to major in math, I can’t understand why you wouldn’t take BC.

I really want to take Calc BC, but the problem is that it didn’t fit in my schedule my junior year, and I would have to drop German in order to take it my senior year. Is there anyway I could explain that?

You could have your counselor explain it in his rec. Is there any way you can take AB?

Nope. They are both offered the same hour as the only two AP German classes. And German is something I have been passionate about for many years. At our school they offer Honors Pre-Calc, and AP Calc BC and AB. You can test out of HPC- which I did and I was placed in AP Calc BC. So I could take Honors Pre-Calc, but I would essentially be wasting my time because I know the material, and tested out of it. Would taking AP Calc online through a college be worth it?

Yes. You’re putting yourself at a pretty big disadvantage if you don’t take some form of calculus. If that’s not possible, definitely have your GC explain that you placed out of precalc.

So should I just take Honors Pre-Calc even though I tested out? Or would an online course work?

Ideally, you’ll take an online calculus course that gets recorded on your transcript. If it can’t go on your transcript, take it anyway and make sure that your GC explains the situation.

Thank you so much for your help! I’ll try to do that.

I agree with Weasel that it’s a very good idea to have some calculus experience for multiple reasons. Good luck!

Besides the Calc issue, are my credentials decent?

Yes, they are definitely strong. I don’t think you have much to worry about beyond the point of making your application reflect who you are as best as possible and hoping whoever reads your application really likes you :). Best of luck at all three schools!

What kind of pacific islander are you btw?

I’m Guamanian.

I just have a question about your awards. For debate, did you go to nationals, or did you just go to nat quals. I know some states are competitive just to go to the qualifier, but I"m wondering if you made it to nats or not. (I do debate too, although my main events don’t exist on the national level).

I actually made it to nationals both times, once to semi-finals in my event.

Nice!! I saw that you do OO, which I’m doing for this year. I’ve done speech since frosh year, but this is my first time doing OO. Any tips?

ooh- i have a few tips i would love to share! PM me, and we can talk about it :)
