Typical Chinese Parents

So I have the typical Chinese parents who want me to go to HYPSM. But right now, I know my chances to these great Universities are close to zero. I am a solid student (rising Junior) with a 4.0 unweighted GPA taking challenging classes. I attend a large public school in a major city. My SAT’s and SAT subject tests are on par with these places. However, my extracurriculars are lacking and I have nothing special under my belt. (A couple school clubs here and there, and a couple hundred volunteer hours)

I’ve been trying to inform my parents of the importance of extracurricular activities to no avail. Are there any great extracurriculars out there I can partake in without the help of my parents? I have a special interest in the medical field, and am willing to spend a lot of my time on these activities. I have neither a car nor the money, so they must be in reach. (My parents work full-time, and probably would not be able to assist me.)

Sorry for the long read, but it’s just been in my mind for a while now. I really want to attend one of these universities… Thanks.

Doesn’t your school have sports? Learn to play an instrument. Start a business. Get a job.

Why do you want to go to HYPSM? What do you plan on majoring in?

LOL, i understand the HYPSM thing. My parents are the same way. From experience, putting your effort into some you love will get you noticed by these schools. For example, run for a position in a club rather than just being in the club. Better yet, start your own club. One of my friends loved playing the violin and started a program for UR childern who didn’t have access to these instructments. She got numerous recognitions for it, and it was definitely one of her passions and it showed. She’s going to Harvard next year. Another example is my cousin who is a freshman at Yale. She, like you, had a thing for medicine, and started doing research, started a medical club at school, was regional officer of a science club, volunteered at the hospital and got a job at a doctor’s office.

What I’m trying to say is, it isnt the amount of clubs you’re in, but rather, how much devotion you give it. Colleges like these, want passion and longevity.

Some advice
Join your debate team if you have one…this is seriously one of the BEST ec’s to have

Also, get a job…that looks awesome to colleges as well

third…set your sights realistically…remember to have some safeties
